Main Campsites of Xiaowutai Mountain
I. North Platform
White House Campsite
It is about one hour’s hike from Chiyapu Village and the only passage en route to the North Platform from Chiyapu. It gets its name from a small white tin shed that once stood here (now demolished). This campsite is commonly used as an advance base for ascending the North Platform.
Hikers usually arrive in Chiyapu by bus late at night. After a quick gear check, they start hiking under the cover of darkness and set up camp at White House Campsite to save time for the summit push the next day.
North No.1, North No.2 and North No.3 Campsites
These are backup campsites along the trail to the North Platform.
North No.1 Campsite sits above Dead Man’s Slope. If first-time hikers feel utterly exhausted upon reaching this spot, they can still turn back safely. Beyond North No.1 Campsite, retreat becomes extremely difficult.
North No.2 and North No.3 Campsites are small and reserved for mountain climbing emergencies.
II. East Platform
East Platform Campsite
The terrain on the East Platform is relatively flat yet sloped, making it a usable but far from ideal campsite.
East Gully Campsite
The largest and most well-favored campsite across the entire Xiaowutai Mountain range. It has access to running water and level ground capable of accommodating over a thousand tents. It is subdivided by elevation into the 2400m, 2200m and 1900m campsites.
Mountain Stream Mouth Campsite
Nicknamed the "Luxury Campsite", it is the easiest to reach. Visitors can ride a mountain tractor straight to the site, and fresh water is available here.
III. Middle Platform
Three-Way Junction Campsite & Middle Platform Summit Campsite
Three-Way Junction Campsite is small with uneven terrain and no water source. Nevertheless, it holds vital strategic value: located at the center of Xiaowutai’s five main peaks, it serves as the midway base for the two-day full-traverse heavy-pack hike covering all five peaks.
If Three-Way Junction is fully occupied, hikers may head to the Middle Platform summit. The summit features flat ground and remnants of old buildings; low broken walls provide shelter against wind. It makes a decent backup campsite, though there is no water supply.
Hundred Flowers Saddle Campsite
The saddle boasts gentle terrain and soft alpine grass, making it an excellent camping spot. No water is available nearby, but a natural spring can be found on the traverse path toward Wool Saddle.
Wool Saddle Campsite
Another great camping location, yet it sits in a natural wind tunnel where gusts can exceed Force 10 on the Beaufort scale. A spring close by provides the only reliable water source along the full five-peak traverse route.
IV. South Platform
The entire South Platform features gentle slopes and extensive alpine meadows with countless potential camping spots, but there is no water anywhere in this area.
V. West Platform
West Platform Summit
Flat ground covered in thick grass with ruins of old structures; suitable for camping with no water source.
Pine Forest Campsite
The mandatory staging point for hikes ascending the West Platform from Xijinhekou Village, around one hour’s walk from the village. It functions identically to White House Campsite for the North Platform route, though no water is available here.
West Gully Campsite
Located in the upper reaches of the Xijin River Gully, it is easily accessible from Jinhekou Park. It boasts abundant, clear drinkable running water.
A trail leads from West Gully Campsite to the Middle-East Ridge, yet the route is rugged, dangerous and prone to disorientation and cliff falls. Hikers have dubbed this stretch the "Little Bermuda Triangle", and extreme caution is advised for anyone attempting it
