Baoning Temple

Baoning Temple is situated in Wujing Village, Huangfengqiao Town, and ranks among the renowned sacred Buddhist sites spanning the Hunan-Jiangxi border region.

First built in the 10th year of the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty (751 AD), the temple was founded by Master Kuang Changzi, a native of You County. On April 17, 1985, the People’s Government of You County designated Baoning Temple a Major Cultural Relic Protection Unit and launched restoration projects. A grand consecration ceremony was held in the spring of 1994.

Nestled amid picturesque scenery, the temple is surrounded by clear streams, green hills and rolling mountain ridges, with convenient transportation access. Behind the temple stands an ancient camphor tree, Cinnamomum micranthum, a nationally protected plant species. Known as the King of Cinnamomum micranthum in Hunan Province, it boasts a tall, straight trunk and luxuriant foliage, bearing great ornamental and scientific research value.

Baoning Temple boasts abundant cultural relics, including numerous tomb stupas and stone stele forests, and was once celebrated for its Eighteen Scenic Sights of Baoning. Three unrivaled treasures of the temple stand out: the Collective Stupa, the Tomb of Master Kuang Changzi together with its stupa cluster, the Records of Baoning Temple, and the Preface written by Wang Fuzhi. Rare medicinal and ornamental plants growing here also include ganoderma lucidum and alocasia cucullata.
