Zhulin Yangshao Culture Site

The site is situated on an earthen mound north of Zhulin Village, 35 kilometres south of the county seat. The cultural layer is distributed on the southern side of the mound’s summit.

Finds include rim fragments of argillaceous red pottery pots, rim shards of sandy grey pottery jars, burnt earth, animal bones and deer antlers. Also unearthed are hand-shaped red and grey pottery pieces trimmed on slow wheels, as well as polished pottery shards. Grooves left during production can be seen on the outer surface of sandy grey pottery shards.

The upper 30 centimetres of the cultural layer consists of topsoil. The middle section has 2 metres of sandy loam, and the lower part contains the cultural remains. The entire mound rises 3.5 metres above the surrounding ground level.

The site is divided into eastern and western sections. The eastern part measures 160 metres from north to south and 150 metres from east to west. The western section is 70 metres long east-west and 60 metres wide north-south. The total area reaches 28,200 square metres.

It was listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit in 1963 and promoted to a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in 1986.
