The river is a tributary of the upper Liangjiang River, located in Gaotun Town, 22 kilometers north of Liping County. It takes its name from Bazhou Village on its riverbank. The section from Bazhou Stockade to Upper Crow Stockade is known as the Bazhou Reach, stretching 12 kilometers long. Towering mountains rise on either side, blanketed in lush green woods, with steep precipices lining the banks, creating stunning natural scenery. The clear waters wind along the undulating terrain, occasionally splitting into two branches and forming numerous sandbars in the river. Verdant mountains, glistening waters, small bridges and riverside dwellings combine to paint picturesque scenes.

Lying in a basin among low and medium hills, Bazhou River Scenic Area belongs to the subtropical humid broad-leaved forest zone. Woods grow along both river banks and cling in belts to half-cliff rock peaks. In spring and summer, green mountains set off the blue waters; in autumn and winter, red leaves glow against rosy clouds. The landscape stretches endlessly, poetic and picturesque.

The scenic area features diverse landscapes: limestone karst landforms, rivers, streams, lakes and islets, subtropical karst forests, underground karst caves, hilly grasslands, as well as rural village scenery and the distinctive customs of the Dong and Miao ethnic groups. Extending from southwest to northeast along the Bazhou River and Fulu River, it covers an area of 15 square kilometers with an average altitude of 400 meters. Its geological formation is developed from limestone and Permian limestone. Carbonate rock layers outcrop in strips across the land, forming rolling mountain ranges and a host of unique sights, including half-cliffs, grotesque peaks, hanging valleys, karst caves and natural stone bridges.

The meandering Bazhou River resembles a blue ribbon winding across rolling hills, grasslands and woodlands. Dotting its banks are a cluster of vivid scenic spots like gems: Immortal Rock, Shaozhai Red Army Bridge, Osmanthus Terrace, Cormorant Perch, Shaozhai Cave Group, Twelve Bends Cave and Flying Dragon Cave. Together they compose a landscape scroll that is both grand and magnificent, fresh and elegant.
