Tangjiang Rock Scenic Area

Tangjiang Rock is one of the core attractions of the Huanjiang-Wuxie National Key Scenic Area. It sits in Tongshan Town, southwest of Zhuji City, 20 kilometres from downtown Zhuji. The Douyan Scenic Area is less than 10 kilometres away, and the Paotou Exit of the Hangzhou-Jinhua-Quzhou Expressway lies just 6 kilometres off, granting highly convenient transport access. Since the Tang clan has lived along this stretch of the Puyang River for generations, the river section here is named Tangjiang (Tang River). The towering giant rock standing amid the wooded riverside hills thus bears the name Tangjiang Rock.

Covering 14 square kilometres, Tangjiang Rock Scenic Area is enclosed by green mountains on three sides and a lake on the fourth. Its major highlights include Tangjiang Rock, Tiger Cave Mountain, Lingping Temple, Five-Finger Mountain and Anhua Lake. The central zone of Tangjiang Rock was recorded as the Site of Thirty-Six Views in ancient texts. Local chronicles once described it: “The rock rises a hundred zhang high, lined with perilous jagged outcrops. Every mountain face bears cliffs, every cliff holds stone formations, every stone shelters grottoes, and every grotto runs through to another — together forming thirty-six distinct scenic vistas.”

Tangjiang Rock stands as the landmark of the entire scenic zone. Over 330 metres tall, it juts abruptly from the banks of the Tang River, rising alone in imposing grandeur with sheer vertical precipices that exude tremendous momentum. Vertical fissures score the rock face, splitting the monolith into countless exotic stone clusters of wildly varied shapes that stir boundless imagination. The western rock wall slopes inward at the top and bulges out below, forming a natural cavern. Looking upward leaves visitors dizzy. Nestled beneath the overhanging cliff is an ancient shrine formerly known as Lord Hu Temple, said to be erected in memory of Hu Deji, a garrison commander of Xinzhou at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. The rear hall of the temple uses the natural cliff as its back wall, requiring no beams, rafters or roof tiles — yet heavy rain never penetrates the shrine interior. The temple stays warm in winter and cool in summer, wrapped in profound tranquillity.

To the right of the giant rock winds a mountain trail, starting gently before growing steeper and twisting sharply. Massive boulders, some as large as houses, have fallen from the cliff above and piled up to form a landscape of bizarre shapes. They resemble lions and monkeys, carps leaping through the Dragon Gate, grey eagles returning to roost, Bodhidharma meditating facing a wall, and stone portals greeting guests — the forms are endless. Jagged fallen stones lean against one another beside the path, creating a maze of stacked-rock grottoes: caves within caves, interconnected tunnels winding deep into the mountainside. Two famous caverns are the Immortal Cave and the Star-Moon Cave, stretching dozens of metres deep with jagged, shadowy rock walls. Wispy tendrils of mist curl from their entrances, and visitors easily lose their bearings once inside. Most mysterious is the South Heavenly Gate attraction: stepping inside and listening quietly, one hears a din like bustling crowds or rushing water currents, an acoustic effect similar to the Echo Wall at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, lending an air of mystique to the site.

Climbing the winding trail to the summit of Tangjiang Rock, visitors reach a wide flat clearing amid dense green pine trees. Five-Finger Mountain, Turtle Rock and Camel Rock lie far below. The Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway and Hangzhou-Jinhua Highway snake across the land like winding dragons, Anhua Lake shimmers smooth as a mirror, and the Huanjiang River glints like a jade ribbon. Standing here evokes the timeless feeling captured by the ancient line: “After climbing Mount Tai, all other mountains seem tiny beneath you.”

Blessed with picturesque scenery that shifts gracefully through all four seasons, Tangjiang Rock boasts rare Danxia landforms, steep winding mountain ridges and deep primeval caves. These natural features support East China’s largest outdoor development training base. Available training programmes cover 5 ground activities and 12 aerial challenges: Air Broken Bridge, Dark Passage, Luding Bridge, High Suspension Cable Bridge, Giant Ladder, High Wire Walk, Hanging Wall, Burmese Bridge, Electric Grid Challenge, Trust Fall, Climb Over Rescue Wall, and Orienteering (or Cave Treasure Hunt). These activities offer a break from the strain of work and study, instilling new motivation, courage and self-confidence. Do you recall the legendary Luding Bridge crossed by the Red Army during the Long March? Our base has recreated this structure for participants to crawl across; the bridge sways violently underfoot, and a single misstep will send you tumbling down. The Giant Ladder uses crossbeams as thick as rice bowls, too wide to grip firmly, with huge gaps between rungs. One can barely hook fingers over the upper beam while feet slip off the lower steps, making each upward rung far harder to scale than ascending to heaven itself. Such development training unlocks latent potential, builds psychological resilience, fosters teamwork and strengthens corporate cohesion.

The water park lies at the foot of Tangjiang Rock amid stunning scenery.
