Shuangxi Lake Scenic Area

Shuangxi Lake Scenic Area is a national AA-level scenic spot. It is located at Shuangxi Book Pavilion, 1.5 kilometers north of the urban area of Rong County, Zigong City, Sichuan Province, and 34 kilometers away from downtown Zigong. It gets its name from its location at the confluence of the Dongchuan and Shoushui Streams. It is an artificial lake built around a key water conservancy hub and ranks as the closest such lake to an urban center in China. The total area of the scenic zone covers 3,465,565 square meters, including a water surface of 2,337,188 square meters and a green space of 602,261 square meters, with a green coverage rate reaching 95%.

Endowed with profound cultural heritage, the scenic area is the hometown of Wang Xiang, a renowned scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty. The Shuangxi Book Pavilion at the foot of Stone Turtle Mountain stands on the original site of Hengxi Pavilion constructed by Wang Xiang. Literati of successive dynasties such as Huang Tingjian and Lu You once traveled here to trace historical relics and composed eulogistic poems, including the line “Its folk are simple and its scholars virtuous; a thousand li stretch of land blooms with poetry and classics”. Zhao Xi, a Hanlin academician, poet, painter and calligrapher of the late Qing Dynasty, was born and raised here. Wu Yuzhang, a proletarian revolutionary, once met underground Party members and patriots here to carry out revolutionary activities. On the dam, the four bold, powerful Chinese characters “Shuangxi Reservoir” were inscribed by General Zhang Aiping, former Minister of National Defense. The scenic area boasts more than fifteen abundant cultural and natural landscapes, including ancient sites like Shuangxi Book Pavilion, Sermon Cave, Returning Spring Pavilion and Xiangsong Bridge. With picturesque scenery embraced by mountains and waters and profound cultural deposits, Shuangxi Book Pavilion is listed as one of the Eight Great Sights of Rongzhou.

Dominating a subtropical low-mountain lake landscape, the scenic spot features a magnificent dam — the largest rock-fill dam nationwide. The vast mist-shrouded lake is encircled by rolling mountain ridges. Two deep, steep gullies wind through the terrain, dotted with distinctive economic forest belts. In spring, visitors can stroll along the lakeside amid blooming peach and pear blossoms, wandering through woods as if entering a fairyland of peach blossoms. In early summer, tourists may head to rural orchards to experience picking loquats by hand. When autumn equinox arrives, boating on the lake allows visitors to watch wild ducks gliding across the water and feel the poetic mood depicted in the line “The setting sun and solitary wild duck fly side by side; autumn waters merge with the sky in one hue”. In leisure hours, you can row a small boat to nearby farm courtyards to taste local free-range chicken and duck, tender ecological Shuangxi fish and succulent whole roasted lamb for an unparalleled gastronomic experience.

The scenic area is divided into five core zones:

Situated on the east bank of the dam with an open view framed by mountains and water, this zone mainly contains Hancui Tower, a pagoda-style landmark; Cuihu Grand Hotel, a three-star antique-style hotel; and a bustling commercial district. Boasting a prime location, complete supporting facilities and lush shade trees, the zone’s Hancui Tower is nicknamed the “Little Yellow Crane Tower”. With multi-layered upturned eaves and classic antique charm, it faces the diversion tower at the lake center from afar, their reflections rippling on the water. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of distant mountains and near waters, making it an ideal vantage point to admire the lake scenery.

Located on the west bank of the dam, Stone Turtle Mountain peaks at an altitude of 433.5 meters and stands alone west of the dam. To its south lies an orchard dominated by michelia alba and peach trees. Yunshui Manor, Huaguoshan Resort and Shuilian Cave Leisure Villa scatter along the hillside, featuring luxurious architecture with unique rural charm. Standing atop the mountain, you can take in a full view of Rongzhou’s mountains, rivers, city outline and the entire lake area.

Nestled along the lakeshore on the west bank of the dam, this zone houses Lanhu Hotel, an elegant antique building with tranquil charm. Visitors may board speedboats to cut through waves and fully appreciate the gorgeous lake and mountain vistas. Cruising right along the lakeshore, you will encounter a peach grove spanning over 300 mu nestled beside hills and woods, filled with blooming peach and plum blossoms and birdsong that captivates all visitors.

Positioned below the dam, this zone features Zixin Garden built in a natural garden style, alongside a children’s amusement park, swimming pool and angling grounds. Equipped with diverse advanced recreational facilities, it serves as a perfect venue for entertainment, relaxation and physical exercise.

Covering the northern Luoyang Stream and northern Dongchuan Gully in the upper reaches of Shuangxi Lake, this zone features lofty mountains and deep valleys with a serene environment. Its key scenic spots include Blue Bridge Green Waters, Stone Gate Historic Trail and Twin Bridges Over Precipitous Gorges.

In accordance with the master tourism development plan of Shuangxi Lake Scenic Area, the management has fully leveraged its strengths of proximity to the city, convenient transport and superior geographic location. Since opening to the public in 1996, over 76 million RMB has been invested in constructing infrastructure and tourism service facilities. Over the years, a full range of leisure venues covering high, medium and budget tiers have been completed, including the three-star Cuihu Grand Hotel, Huaguoshan Resort, Lanhu Hotel and Zixin Garden. Supporting facilities such as a tourist service center and emergency medical center have been built, alongside a parking lot of over 10,000 square meters. Two dedicated tourist bus routes have been launched, a lakeside wharf constructed, and three speed yachts plus 85 wooden boats deployed, supported by dedicated staff and equipment for safety, rescue and fire protection. At present, the scenic area boasts comprehensive supporting facilities scattered across the landscape, including hotels, mountain manors, tea houses, bamboo lodges, entertainment plazas, amusement parks, swimming pools and fishing grounds. Harmoniously blending graceful natural scenery with delicate man-made attractions, Shuangxi Lake stands out as Rong County’s most distinctive tourist destination and an ideal venue for business negotiations, sightseeing and holiday retreats.

The scenic area abolished entrance ticket fees in October 2005.
