Cradle of the Nadam Festival — Gegentala Grassland
Nestled on the Durbat (Siziwang Banner) Grassland at the northern foot of the Daqing Mountains in Inner Mongolia, Gegentala Grassland lies 128 kilometers away from Hohhot, the regional capital. As one of the five major grassland tourist zones in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, it was among China’s first batch of national 4A-level scenic spots and remains the country’s sole 4A-level grassland scenic area to this day.
Gegentala means "vast and bright grassland" in Mongolian. It serves as an ideal destination for sightseeing, leisure and summer retreats for domestic and overseas visitors in summer and autumn, and has gained worldwide fame as the landing site for the Shenzhou series spacecraft.
Every year on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month, local herdsmen hold the traditional Mongolian Obo Worship Festival here. Since 1989, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Tourism Nadam Fair has been hosted here annually from July 25th to July 31st in the Gregorian calendar. Over the past two decades, the fair has expanded year by year. While preserving its traditional features, it has introduced innovative activities with increasingly diverse programs, drawing rising visitor participation and growing appeal. It has grown into the flagship tourism festival brand of the entire autonomous region.
