Yang Family Generals Historical Site Scenic Area
Dai County is the primary setting for the tales of the Yang Family Generals, where they fought and resided for the longest period of time. To this day, Dai County boasts the country’s richest collection of cultural relics and folk legends related to the Yang Family Generals.
General Yang Zhongwu Memorial Temple
Listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Provincial Level of Shanxi, this temple serves as the ancestral shrine for worshipping all heroic martyrs of the Yang clan. Luti Jian Village, where the temple stands, is now the largest settlement of descendants of the Yang Family Generals nationwide.
The temple was first built in the 16th year of the Zhiyuan reign of the Yuan Dynasty (1279 AD) by Yang You and Yang Shan, the 14th-generation grandsons of Yang Ye, by imperial order.
Inside the temple stand statues and spirit tablets of Yang Ye, his wife She Taijun, their descendants, and female warriors of the Yang household including Mu Guiying. Through extensive written records, photographs and physical artifacts, the temple vividly presents the heroic deeds of the loyal Yang clan guarding the frontier to defend the nation, as well as their widely known folk legends.
Though the temple is modest in scale today, it preserves over a hundred precious cultural relics inscribed by distinguished officials of successive dynasties in praise of the Yang Family Generals, including inscriptions, eulogies, horizontal inscribed boards, couplets and stone steles. The most treasured artifacts are as follows:
- The Yang Clan Genealogy Scroll, a Southern Song Dynasty relic bearing imperial edicts, royal seals and authentic calligraphy tributes to the Yang Generals by eminent Song officials such as Fan Zhongyan, Zhou Bida and Fang Fengchen;
- The Luti Stone, the symbolic core relic of the temple dating back to the Yuan Dynasty;
- Six precious stone steles from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties recording historical events of the Yang Family Generals;
- The Yang Clan Genealogy printed in the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty.
Tomb of the Seventh Son of General Yang
It is the only surviving tomb left by the Yang Family Generals from their frontier garrison missions across the country, located in Dongliushu Village, 25 kilometers east of the county seat.
City of the Sixth Son of General Yang
This is the most intact surviving military fortification constructed by the Yang Family Generals for frontier defense. It sits in Penyao Village, Huyu Township, 20 kilometers northeast of the county seat.
