Yuping Park in Kaihua
Also known as Sleeping Buddha Mountain and Huashan Mountain, Yuping Park sits in the county seat of Kaihua, Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The mountain stands 231.3 meters above sea level and is covered with lush green pines.
According to the Records of Kaihua County compiled in the Qing Dynasty, the mountain was formerly called Sawu Mountain. It also got its alternative names — Buddha Jade Mountain and Yuping Mountain — because its contour resembles a reclining Buddha as well as a jade screen. Lingshan Temple was erected in the Song Dynasty, Yugong Pavilion in the Ming Dynasty, and Xilai Nunnery in the Qing Dynasty. The "Three Sights of Sleeping Buddha Mountain" refer to Lingshan Temple, Xilai Rock and the ancient camphor tree on Huashan Mountain.
Sleeping Buddha Mountain was first developed into Zhongshan Park in 1946, with eight houses built, yet it fell into disuse later. It was reconstructed in the autumn of 1958 and renamed Huashan Park, only to be abandoned again during the Cultural Revolution. In 1982, the park’s boundary was demarcated, covering an area of 500 mu, and the park was restored. It was officially named "Yuping Park" in 1985, with new facilities constructed including a winding mountain sightseeing trail, Sun Reflection Tower, Jichang Pavilion, Osmanthus Appreciation Pavilion, rockeries, fish ponds and a deer enclosure.
