Maowutang Scenic Area

Maowutang Scenic Area is situated in Shanchuan Township, Anji County. As recorded in the Records of Anji County: "Maowutang Mountain, formerly known as Stone Guanyin Mountain, lies three kilometers west of Majianong and borders Shanhe Township to the west, standing at an altitude of 1,085.9 meters. A Stone Guanyin Temple once stood halfway up the mountain." The Stone Guanyin Temple referred to is today’s Stone Buddha Temple.

Stone Buddha Temple boasts a history of roughly over a thousand years. Research based on local place name records confirms that in the Xinyou year of the Tianfu reign of the late Tang Dynasty (901 AD), a literatus named Huang Yan visited the temple and composed a poem: Purple mist shrouds pine trees winding along streams; Clouds break above frigid stone cliffs atop the peaks. Hundreds of birds chirp amid flowers filling the valley; Winding stone paths lead to quiet brooks murmuring soft. Nestled amid lotus blooms stands Stone Buddha Temple, Sweet immortal dew drips endlessly in Guanyin Cave.

The ridges of Maowutang Mountain fold and curve, resembling layers of clustered flower petals. The area boasts abundant vegetation with distinct layered textures and a rich variety of hues and shapes. Mountain blossoms bloom in seasonal succession, set off by varying shades of emerald green. Winding cobblestone footpaths run alongside clear mountain brooks everywhere. Some streams plunge down as white silk-like waterfalls, while others pool into jade-green deep ponds. Steep sheer cliffs and jagged grotesque rock formations add further grandeur to the landscape.
