Jiunü Fairy Lake Scenic Area

Jiunü Fairy Lake Scenic Area is nestled in the Qin River Valley of the Taihang Mountains in eastern Yangcheng County. The lake stretches more than 10 kilometres long and covers a total area of 13 square kilometres.

According to legend, the Ninth Daughter of the Jade Emperor, also known as the Ninth Fairy, lived on the Fairy Platform in the middle of the lake and often bathed and roamed here. Hence the lake was named Jiunü Fairy Lake. Since ancient times, it has been a favourite retreat for nobles and literati, who left many popular poems such as "Scenic spots abound in Taihang, yet none can surpass this place" and "On a solitary rocky peak, I see the great river stretching far and wide". Today it has grown into the largest water park in Jincheng City.

Winding through green mountain valleys, the scenic spot boasts numerous attractions: the Ninth Fairy Platform, White Cloud Cave, Black Dragon Pool known as the "Eye of the Sea", and the Xiaojian River Valley ideal for leisure and health preservation. Highlights also include Yanhe Spring, the largest spring in Shanxi, the water diversion project of Yangcheng Power Plant — Asia’s first thermal power plant, the Yunling Cliff for self-service rock climbing and extreme challenges, and the Duhe Dam with cascading snow-white waterfalls. Travellers can marvel at nature’s wonderful craftsmanship and appreciate the perfect integration of natural scenery and cultural landscapes.

Surrounded by green mountains and clear waters, Jiunü Fairy Lake bears similarities to the Li River and the Three Gorges. Boating on the lake, you will see views changing constantly. It feels as if the boat is sailing on water while you wander amid a painted scroll. In spring, peach blossoms and green trees bloom in gorgeous colours; in autumn, smoke trees blaze with red foliage in rich hues. Whether you go boating or fishing, you will feel like an immortal wandering in a fairyland, free from worldly troubles.
