Visit Deren Tribe of the Ewenki People to Experience the Ancient Grassland Life of the Ewenki Ethnic Group

Deep in the grassland beside primeval forests, the tribe lies 136 kilometres away from the banner’s administrative seat. The Hui River Basin is an Ewenki settlement boasting rich folk customs and profound cultural heritage. Deren Summer Camp is a grassland tribe spontaneously formed by Ewenki herdsmen living along the Hui River over centuries.

When the grass turns lush green every year, local herdsmen drive their cattle and sheep to the water-and-grass abundant Deren Summer Camp. They set up unique wicker yurts exclusive to the Ewenki people and launch summer pastoral production for the whole year. Over a hundred yurts line up in a spectacular row, with galloping horses and flocks of livestock stretching across the steppe, presenting a unique scene where ancient nomadic traditions blend with modern life. It offers a rare glimpse of authentic, age-old primitive grassland living.

At Deren Summer Camp, visitors may take part in daily pastoral work: milking cows, collecting cow dung, herding livestock on horseback, calling on relatives by Mirigan cart, tasting and making dairy products, and helping erect Ewenki wicker yurts for an overnight stay. You can enjoy folk song and dance performances together with local herdsmen, watch and join traditional Ewenki competitions including the Qiangshu Wrestling Contest and Silver Bowl Grabbing Contest. Other highlights include sheep-slaughtering folk demonstrations, equestrian shows, and an authentic whole roasted lamb feast. In addition, you can admire the breathtaking wetland scenery of the Hui River National Nature Reserve.
