Cliff Carvings at Faxiangyan Park

Since the Tang and Song dynasties, the ancient city of Wugang has been a captivating tourist destination. Many renowned literati including Wang Anshi and Liu Zongyuan once visited Faxiangyan and Tongbao Mountain, leaving behind their precious calligraphic works. Wugang Inscription, composed by Liu Zongyuan, was once located on Tongbao Mountain. The two characters "Stone Water Cliff" inscribed by Wang Anshi are still preserved to this day.

More than 70 pieces of inscriptions by celebrities from the Song to the Qing dynasties survive at Faxiangyan. They are carved on the walls of various caves and amid dense woods, featuring diverse calligraphic styles including cursive, regular, clerical, seal and semi-cursive scripts, each vying to display its unique charm.

Particularly precious among them are: the forty gatha characters of the Diamond Prajna Sutra written by Wu Zhong, an administrative official of Duliang Prefecture, in the 3rd year of the Kaixi reign of the Song Dynasty (1207); the three regular-script characters "Jade Hairpin" inscribed by Lou Yue, Secretariat Drafter, in the 1st year of the Longxing reign (1163); and the carving left by Prince Zhu Xuefeng of the Min Princely House. These works have long won high praise from calligraphers
