Wanjia Rock Cliff Inscriptions

Situated to the right of Bailong Mountain in Heba Township, west of Shiqian County, the site is around 60 kilometers away from the county seat. Amid the precipitous cliffs runs a natural rock corridor approximately 1,000 meters long and 1 to 8 meters wide, capable of holding more than 500 people. Ascending from the bank of the Xiao River, the corridor is divided into four sections: Daka, Zhongka, Niuka and Shijiaka.

The layered rock face features alternating vertical black and white stripes. Starting from the red-character inscription "Simeng Pass", over 40 carved writings have been discovered here. The earliest one dates back to the 12th lunar month of the 2nd year of the Zhishun reign of the Yuan Dynasty, which reads: "Those who took refuge here perished; the tribes were vanquished when the rock walls crumbled."

Another inscription records the rebellion of Yang Yinglong, Pacification Commissioner of Bozhou. It states that imperial troops were dispatched to suppress the uprising, and many people fled here to seek shelter. The writer thus inscribed this historic site of Bailong Mountain, followed by a poem (omitted).

About 80 meters below Zhongka, a doggerel is carved on the cliff: "Guizhou is all covered with slopes,

The world is made of mountains and rivers.

One can never catch sight of the Yellow River,

Rocks and slopes pile up layer upon layer.

Even octogenarians till the fields on hills,

And three-year-old toddlers climb the slopes.

Familiar with neither Confucian classics nor books,

We only sing along with birds in the mountains."
