Scenic Description
Spring Ripples of Mandarin Duck River ranks among the Eight Famous Sights of Wuzhou. This spot marks the confluence of the Guijiang River and the Xunjiang River (upper reach of the Xijiang River). The clear green current of the Guijiang River flows side by side with the turbid brown current of the Xijiang River — one clear, one muddy; one gentle, one swift — with a striking distinct boundary between them. Locals call this waterway the Mandarin Duck River, which was highly praised by the great Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo as "Unrivaled under heaven, this lovely Mandarin Duck River".
The river boasts gorgeous scenery. Looking afar, the vast Xijiang River surges forward in powerful currents, while the Guijiang River glimmers emerald green with rippling waves. Where the two rivers merge, the two streams lean and intertwine just like a pair of playful mandarin ducks clinging tightly to each other, inseparable for all time.
Legend says that Su Dongpo passed through Wuzhou after receiving amnesty in the Song Dynasty. On a Mid-Autumn night, he cruised on the Mandarin Duck River. Faced with the uniquely dual-toned river water, he was filled with emotion and composed the poem: "I love the clear stream and paddle on and on; Unrivaled under heaven, this lovely Mandarin Duck River." Since then, the name Mandarin Duck River has spread among the people. Spring Ripples of Mandarin Duck River tops the list of Wuzhou’s Eight Famous Sights. Every tourist who visits this marvel cannot help but marvel at its unique beauty.
At the end of 1984, Wuzhou built the scenic area Spring Ripples of Mandarin Duck River at Triangle Mouth on the Hexi bank. Its quaint and elegant pavilions, as well as winding undulating waterfront corridors, draw numerous visitors to lean on railings and gaze far into the distance. Tourists watch the mighty river flowing eastward, admire the miraculous merging of clear and muddy waters, and view the ancient Yunsheng Pagoda atop Volcano Hill on the south bank.
In June 2000, the Mandarin Duck River Bridge was erected above the river confluence, bringing greater convenience for sightseers.
