The total highway mileage of Tongliao City reaches 6,939 kilometers, including 1,918 kilometers of asphalt pavement. There are 278 bridges with a total linear length of 6,774 meters. The highway density stands at 11.6 kilometers per 100 square kilometers, and Tongliao has achieved highway access to all townships. Four national highways, namely G111, G303, G304 and G204, run through the city with a combined length of 901 kilometers.

At present, an interconnected crisscross transportation network centered on Horqin District has taken shape. It connects all banners, counties and cities within Tongliao, extends to all towns and sums, and links externally to core cities including Shenyang, Changchun and Jinzhou, as well as coastal ports such as Tianjin, Dalian, Yingkou and Qinhuangdao.

Tongliao boasts an extensive railway network. Six railways — Jitong, Jingtong, Tongrang, Dazheng, Pingqi and Tonghuo — traverse the whole territory, covering more than 1,000 kilometers within the city limits. Tongliao Railway Station ranks among China’s 40 key national railway hubs. Upon completion of the ongoing secondary-class six-yard marshalling project, the station will become one of the country’s 14 major freight marshalling stations.

Tongliao Airport can accommodate medium-sized passenger aircraft. Same-day round-trip flights operate on the Ulanhot–Tongliao–Beijing–Hohhot route.

Moli Temple Sand Lake Tourist Area lies 45 kilometers southwest of downtown Tongliao. Endowed with lush water plants and abundant grass, fattened fish and sheep, picturesque scenery and singing birds amid blooming flowers, it is reputed as "West Lake of Tongliao" and "Pearl of the Sand Sea".

Famous at home and abroad for Asia’s largest desert reservoir and the world’s longest artificial sand dam, the resort draws countless visitors with the legendary Moli Temple and the charming "Pearl of the Sand Sea". It also features eight signature sand lake scenic spots: Moli Hall, Eight Willows Terrace, Green Lotus Pond, Echoing Water Bridge, Turtle Pond Island, South Ocean Peninsula, Bird’s Nest Archipelago and Arctic Ocean Water Restaurant. Clusters of Mongolian yurts and authentic whole-fish feasts showcase distinctive local and ethnic customs to attract tourists. This glittering pearl on the sand lake is the pride of Tongliao locals and a unique tourist destination north of the Great Wall, receiving 200,000 to 300,000 Chinese and foreign visitors annually.

The tourist area enjoys convenient transport, smooth communication, complete accommodation and catering services, and a full range of amusement facilities. It houses a large restaurant hall and a catering street capable of serving 2,000 diners at one time. The reservoir yields pollution-free fresh fish of diverse varieties, including common southern river fish, northern carp and crucian carp, as well as rare species such as whitebait, soft-shelled turtle and Wuchang bream.

For accommodation and aquatic recreation, visitors can board large cruise ships, pedal boats, bumper boats and fiberglass speedboats. A ten-thousand-person bathing beach and winding lakeside sandbanks are available for swimming and sand bathing, alongside luxurious dance halls and open-air plazas for singing and dancing. In addition, the tourist area provides a shopping street, fishing grounds, a Buddha shrine, a photo studio and many other leisure and service facilities.
