Transportation Guide

In 1997, Wuhai was served by one major railway trunk line, the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway. There were 18 arterial highways in total, including National Highway 110 from Dengkou to Mahuanggou and National Highway 109 from Qipanjing to Shizuishan.

The annual passenger throughput reached 1.9418 million person-times, and freight volume hit 11.1647 million tons. Among these figures, railways carried 311,800 passengers and 2.4147 million tons of cargo, while highways transported 1.63 million passengers and 8.75 million tons of goods.

Scenic Introduction

The Yellow River flows 75.5 kilometers through Wuhai. This river section combines the grandeur of northern frontier landscapes and the grace of southern rivers. More than a dozen islands and mid-river sandbars of varying sizes scatter along the waterway, just like emerald beads dotted on the silk ribbon of the Yellow River. Lush green grass and towering trees cover the islets and shoals, presenting gorgeous natural scenery — a unique natural asset that endows Wuhai with unparalleled advantages for tourism development.

For many years, Wuhai’s tourism industry has centered on Yellow River development. After years of construction and exploitation, the scenic belt has taken initial shape.

Major Attractions

Dazhongtan Scenic Area
Covering over 7,000 mu and surrounded by water on all sides, part of the area has been developed with abundant flowering trees, fruit trees and ornamental trees planted. Every spring and summer, blossoms burst into full bloom, turning the whole islet into a sea of flowers.
Lihuazhongtan Scenic Area
Spanning more than 3,000 mu, the islet is covered in dense woods, thriving flowers and grasses, encircled by green trees and stretches of reeds, retaining a pristine natural landscape with outstanding views. A multi-functional comprehensive entertainment zone will be completed here in the near future.
Wuxiaotan Scenic Area (also known as Populus Euphratica Island)
Consisting of five small islets with a total area of around 1,500 mu, the site is enclosed by water and blanketed with lush trees and wild blossoms, boasting pleasant scenery. It is most famous for its tall, dense populus euphratica forests.
Also called diversiform-leaved poplar, populus euphratica is one of the world’s rare tree species and a Class II national protected wild plant in China. A range of ancient-style, modern and ethnic-themed tourism facilities have been preliminarily built on the island, making it an ideal spot for sightseeing, rest, catering, accommodation, vacations and leisure activities. In the near future, Wuxiaotan will grow into a fully equipped resort and wellness zone with a pleasant environment.
To facilitate tourists, municipal tourism authorities have built more than a dozen cruise ships of different sizes for visitors to enjoy leisurely river tours.
