In 1997, Wuhai was connected by one major railway trunk line, the Baotou–Lanzhou Railway. There were 18 arterial highways in total, including National Highway 110 from Dengkou to Mahuanggou and National Highway 109 from Qipanjing to Shizuishan. The annual passenger transport volume reached 1.9418 million person-times, while freight volume hit 11.1647 million tons. Railway services carried 311,800 passengers and 2.4147 million tons of cargo; highways transported 1.63 million passengers and 8.75 million tons of goods.

This scenic stretch lies within Wuhai City. The terrain along this section of the Yellow River is complex, boasting a landscape utterly distinct from other river reaches. Upstream, the Helan Mountains and Zhuozi Mountain stand facing each other, creating swift river currents. Three islands line up in the river, and the largest one is densely covered with populus euphratica trees, hence the name Populus Euphratica Island. Leaves growing on the upper, middle and lower parts of a single populus euphratica tree take entirely different shapes, delivering a naturally exquisite charm. Three giant Mongolian yurts have been built on the island for visitors to rest.

The river surface in the middle reach is smooth as silk, with two small sandbars — Dazhongtan and Lihuatan — sitting in the center of the water. Two Yellow River bridges arch across the river like rainbows linking the east and west banks, forming a magnificent view where water winds around Wuhai and twin bridges connect three mountain ridges.

Downstream, the Yellow River flows toward the Hetao Plain, flanked by the Ulan Buh Desert on both sides. A desert scenic resort stands on the west riverbank accessible by cruise ships, where tourists can enjoy sand sliding, swimming and camel riding.
