Railway
Linfen Railway Station is located on Chezhan Street in the northeastern urban area. The Tongpu Railway, a major north-south trunk line running through Shanxi, passes through the city. The Houxi and Houyue Railways, part of China’s second Eurasian Continental Bridge, stretch east and west. Trains from Linfen run to Beijing, Xi’an, Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin and other cities.
Highway
An expressway directly connects Linfen and Huozhou. In addition, the Dayun Highway (Datong–Yuncheng) and National Highway 108 run north and south across Shanxi, while National Highway 310 and Jinhan Highway extend east and west. Long-distance buses from Linfen Coach Station travel to Taiyuan, Xi’an, Yuncheng and all counties and districts under Linfen’s jurisdiction.

Scenic Introduction
Hukou Waterfall is the largest yellow waterfall in the world. It rose to fame in recent years thanks to many spectacular stunts across the Yellow River performed by institutions and individuals such as Ko Sau-leung.
The waterfall lies 25 kilometres southwest of Ji County, Shanxi Province. When the Yellow River flows into this section, high mountains on both sides narrow the river channel sharply. The width of the river shrinks abruptly from 300 metres to merely more than 50 metres, forming the Hukou Waterfall with a drop of 20 to 30 metres. Standing close by, you can see towering surging waves presenting a magnificent scene. Visitors who fear heights are advised not to stand in the front row.
Right in the centre of the river drop, at the spout of the waterfall, sits a shiny strange stone known as the Turtle Stone. It rises and falls with the water level. No matter how high or low the river is, a small part of the stone always stays above water, adding a touch of mystery to the waterfall.
Three kilometres downstream along the river stands another huge rock called Mengmen Hill, a famous spot to view the "Moon over Mengmen at Night". On the 15th day of each lunar month, when night falls, the bright moon hangs over the riverbed. If you face south while standing on the north bank, the moon in the water splits into two rows flowing downwards. If you face north while standing on the south bank, the two reflections merge into one and come straight toward you.
Access Routes
Hukou is 173 kilometres southeast of Linfen City, 45 kilometres from downtown Ji County, and 50 kilometres east of Yichuan County in Shaanxi Province. Tourists may choose the following routes:
Take a coach directly from Linfen. A Class III highway connects Linfen and Hukou. Travellers from Beijing, Taiyuan, Xi’an, Chengdu and other cities can take trains to Linfen first.
Start from Ji County. Ji County is 352 kilometres away from Taiyuan via the Ji-Tai Highway. The county transport company operates daily shuttle buses to Taiyuan, Linfen, Houma and other places.
Set off from Yichuan County in Shaanxi Province. Yichuan is 50 kilometres from Hukou. You can take a long-distance bus from Xi’an, a journey of over 300 kilometres. The trip from Yan’an is much shorter, only 164 kilometres.
Accommodation and Catering
There is a local saying for travelling here: "Stay in Shanxi, enjoy the view from Shaanxi".
In Ji County, Ji State Hotel has 200 beds, and the Grain Bureau Guest House provides 85 beds.
At the waterfall site, the local tourism bureau runs a reception station with a dining hall and simple guest rooms for researchers and visitors who stay overnight to admire the moon scene over Mengmen Hill.
Tips
The water volume of Hukou Waterfall reaches its peak every October, making it the most popular visiting time. However, the temperature is rather low at this time, so please bring a thick coat.
