Scenic Description

The Thousand-Buddha Cliff is located on the hillside of Guozhuang Village, 7.5 kilometres south of Huoxian County, Shanxi Province.
Towering peaks are dotted with blooming wild flowers, among which the cliff carvings come into view.
The grotto carving project began in the Tang Dynasty, continued through the Song and Yuan dynasties, and was finally completed in the fifth year of the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty (1501 AD).
The main Buddha statue is about 8 metres high. Inscriptions dating back to the Zhenguan and the fifth year of the Tianbao reign (746 AD), as well as the second year of the Changqing reign (822 AD) of the Tang Dynasty are carved on its lower part.
The 2-metre-high statue of Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin was made in the Yuan Dynasty.
Most smaller Buddha statues are grouped in sets of three (one Buddha with two Bodhisattvas or one Buddha with two disciples), while some niches contain only a single Buddha.
These carvings feature exquisite craftsmanship, vivid modelling and strong folk artistic characteristics
