Transportation Guide

Zibo City lies in central Shandong Province and serves as a vital transportation hub. Located midway along the Jiaoji Railway, it borders the Yellow River to the north, the Yimeng Mountains to the south, the Jiaodong Peninsula to the east, and Jinan, the provincial capital, to the west. It is a bright pearl embedded in the land of Qilu.
Zibo features an elongated territory, stretching a maximum of 87 kilometers from east to west and 151 kilometers from north to south, covering a total area of 5,938 square kilometers. The city administers five urban districts—Zhangdian, Boshan, Zichuan, Linzi and Zhoucun; three counties—Huantai, Gaoqing and Yiyuan; and a High-tech Industrial Development Zone. The five urban districts are roughly 20 kilometers apart from one another, blending urban and rural landscapes to form a plum-blossom-shaped cluster city, hailed by experts as the "Zibo Model".
Zibo itself has no airport, yet it is merely 72 kilometers away from Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport. Shuttle buses between Zibo and the airport run twice daily: departures from Zibo at 05:20 and 12:20, and return trips from the airport at 10:00 and 16:30.
Zibo Railway Station sits at the southern end of Central South Road in Zhangdian, separated from Zibo Bus Station by just one road. Trains departing from here head east to Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai; west to Jinan, Zhengzhou and Xi’an; south to Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou; and north to Shijiazhuang, Beijing and Jiamusi.

Scenic Spot Introduction

The Zaozhuang World-Famous Pomegranate Garden Ecological Cultural Tourism Zone is situated in the southern urban area of Zaozhuang City and on the sunny slopes of the mountains in western Yicheng District. Stretching 45 li from east to west and 6 li from north to south, it spans 120,000 mu. Home to over 5.3 million pomegranate trees of 48 varieties, the garden was first planted during the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Western Han Dynasty, boasting a history of more than 2,000 years. Renowned domestically and internationally for its long history, vast coverage, abundant trees, complete varieties and superior fruit quality, it is China’s largest pomegranate garden, certified as a Guinness World Record by the Shanghai Great World Guinness Headquarters, hence its name "World-Famous Pomegranate Garden". Listed as a key scenic spot on the "Flower Route" tourist corridor, a Provincial Scenic Area and a National 3A-level Tourist Attraction, it is an integrated tourist destination combining natural mountains, ecological gardens, folk religion, humanistic history, sightseeing and leisure resorts.
Like a radiant pearl shifting hues with the seasons, it nestles amid the green mountains and clear waters of southern Shandong. The cultural relics scattered throughout the mountain garden distill the cultural history of southern Shandong, stirring visitors’ longing for ancient times.
With mutually reinforcing ecological protection and tourism resource development, the local government has invested over 30 million RMB to develop attractions within the garden, including Qingtan Temple, Yiwang Pavilion, Central Garden, Sanjin Academy, Kuang Heng Shrine and Immortal Cave. The site is dotted with secluded valleys, exotic grottoes, fantastic rock peaks, flowing springs, waterfalls, ancient rare trees, stone steles and carvings, where natural and cultural landscapes merge and complement each other to form a spectacular view. Through continuous construction and upgrading, the World-Famous Pomegranate Garden has evolved into a tourist zone with increasingly comprehensive tourism functions and complete supporting facilities. The ancient pomegranate garden has taken on a new look, radiating enchanting charm and showcasing its brand-new grace to the whole country and the world. Since its development, the garden’s fame and appeal have grown steadily, welcoming tourists from over 30 countries and regions, receiving 500,000 visitors annually with year-on-year growth in tourism revenue.
Visiting the Zaozhuang Pomegranate Garden from east to west, after passing through the grand, time-honored archway of the World-Famous Pomegranate Garden, the first attraction is Qingtan Temple. Founded during the Kaiyuan Period of the prosperous Tang Dynasty and originally named Yunfeng Temple, it nestles in the valley between Chu Mountain and Han Mountain. It was renamed Qingtan Temple after green sandalwood trees flourished across the valley. Renovated and refined, today it is the most flourishing sacred Buddhist site for cultural tourism in southern Shandong. There are two highlights to visiting Qingtan Temple: admiring thousand-year-old sandalwood trees and worshipping Buddha to embrace the serene tranquility far from mortal bustle. Dozens of ancient sandalwood trees in the secluded valley, weathered by wind and frost, have been sculpted by nature’s uncanny craftsmanship and the passage of time into breathtaking natural artworks. Inside the temple compound stands a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, a male and female pair growing intertwined, its dense shade covering the temple halls, infusing the Buddhist shrine with rich earthly warmth and cultural depth. When autumn arrives, forests blaze with color; red maples, ginkgoes and green sandalwoods paint the valley in layers of red, yellow and green, their reflections rippling across the glittering Qingtan Lake, creating an unparalleled poetic scene. The secluded valley, ancient temple, lake and mountain scenery together form "Autumn Scenery of Qingtan", the top of the Eight Ancient Sights of Old Yicheng County—a perfect fusion of cultural relics and natural landscapes.
Behind the Mahavira Hall of the temple stands Jinjie Tower, built in the Northern Song Dynasty to commemorate national hero Yue Fei, locally known as "Yue Fei’s Eye-Rest Tower". Behind the tower lies Bat Cave, the only natural grotto in the pomegranate garden, a marvelous natural wonder. The Zaozhuang International Friendship Calligraphy Corridor leans against mountains and rivers, hidden among lush green trees, blending traditional Chinese garden aesthetics with Japanese architectural styles. It houses a rich collection of ancient and modern Chinese poems and calligraphy masterpieces by renowned artists at home and abroad, adding poetic charm and enriching the cultural connotations of the pomegranate garden. Pomegranate-themed painting and calligraphy art born here has elevated the cultural taste of the scenic zone. The seven-story octagonal Baoguo Pagoda, hailed as "the tallest pagoda north of the Yangtze River", towers majestically at the end of the Qingtan Valley, offering visitors an ideal vantage point to listen to wind, watch rain and admire the sandalwood woods. Supporting facilities including tourist roads, environmental amenities, shopping, catering and communication services within the pomegranate garden are steadily improving.
Yiwang Pavilion perches atop the highest point of the garden. When pomegranate flowers bloom, climbing the pavilion affords a panoramic view of the 100,000-mu garden: valleys carpeted in emerald green, countless trees draped in crimson blossoms, a splendid floral landscape that lets visitors fully experience the beauty of "treading pomegranate groves atop Yiwang Pavilion".
The core gem of the entire garden is the Central Garden, the birthplace and best-preserved original zone of the pomegranate plantation. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, it features dense ancient trees, winding quiet paths and an elegant primitive style. Historical records note that Kuang Heng, prime minister of the Western Han Dynasty, introduced pomegranate saplings from the imperial forbidden garden and first established a variety nursery here. Generations of cultivation and expansion from this origin point gradually formed the renowned 100,000-mu garden seen today. Nestled between mountains and streams, the uniquely shaped pomegranate trees boast beautiful foliage and blossoms all year round, unfolding a vivid landscape scroll that showcases the magical charm formed by natural creation and local culture. The essence of pomegranate culture lies in pomegranate bonsai art, which originates from nature yet surpasses it, praised as "silent poetry" and "three-dimensional paintings". Yicheng pomegranate bonsai are extraordinary masterpieces of bonsai art, winning numerous awards at home and abroad.
Most pomegranate trees in the Central Garden are around 300 years old, densely packed in varied, rugged forms arranged naturally along mountain slopes and streams to create an elegant winding compound garden. Three perennial springs flow endlessly within the garden—Holy Water Spring, Grace Spring and Rolling Cauldron Spring—their murmuring streams converging into Azure Dragon Creek. Legend tells of the Pomegranate Fairy scattering pomegranate seeds across mountains to bless humanity, guardian of the garden. A magnificent statue of the Pomegranate Fairy now stands north of Dragon Pool. The garden also features teahouses, conference rooms and villas, making it an ideal destination for leisure getaways and small-to-medium-sized conferences.
Two li west of the Central Garden, between massive stone cliffs, lies Stone House Spring. Drawing on literary works by Jia Sanjin, a great Ming Dynasty writer, Sanjin Academy was built beside the spring to recreate the scene of Jia Sanjin writing and compiling books, a scholarly sanctuary steeped in literary aura. Inside Kuang Heng Shrine in the southern part of the garden, visitors learn the inspiring story of Kuang Heng, a distinguished Western Han Confucian scholar and legendary prime minister, who bore a hole in the wall to borrow his neighbor’s lamplight for diligent study, motivating later generations to pursue knowledge tirelessly.
