Scenic Spot Introduction
Overview
The Thousand-Li Embankment is situated at the eastern outlet of the lower reaches of Baiyangdian Lake in Renqiu City, northwest of Cangzhou. Its closest point to downtown Renqiu is 10 kilometers.
Known as the Pearl of North China, Baiyangdian is the largest freshwater lake in North China, covering a total area of 366 square kilometers. Its unique scenery differs from vast lakes merging with sky and water, as well as mountain reservoirs set amid hills and streams. Villages nestle within the lake waters, and waterways wind through villages. Rivers and lakes are interconnected, with farmlands and water areas interlaced. Ditches and reed marshes weave the lake into a vast aquatic labyrinth.
The embankment is 130 kilometers south of Beijing and 120 kilometers southwest of Tianjin, with a water area of 64.8 square kilometers. Lush willows line the banks, reeds sway in the wind and lotus flowers send forth delicate fragrance. Fish swim in the water while birds soar overhead. The lake presents distinctive views all year round: birds dart and fish leap in spring, red lotus blooms in summer, golden reeds stretch as far as the eye can see in autumn, and ice sleds race across the frozen surface in winter. It is an ideal resort for leisure and vacation.
The scenic area boasts a host of famous sights: Willows along the Long Embankment in Mist, Ferry at Dusk amid Jujube Groves, Fragrant Lotus for Ten Li, Moonlight over Baiyangdian at Night, Peach Blossoms Reflected on Water, and Sunset Glow over Golden Sands. Near the lake stand the Grand Mozhou Temple and Bianque Shrine.

Local Specialties
Baiyangdian is abundant in natural produce. The waters teem with aquatic life, home to 54 fish species across 15 families. Green shrimp, river crabs and carps are the most renowned, popular delicacies on dining tables in Beijing, Tianjin and surrounding regions.
Reeds grow in large quantities here, with an annual output reaching 150 million kilograms. Mats woven from local reeds are snow-white and fine-textured, accounting for over one quarter of the national total output. They were once designated as tributes for imperial courts through the ages. Tourist souvenirs including Baiyangdian writing brushes, black pottery and reed patch paintings are available in Renqiu and around the lake.
