Eight Highlights of Ancient Wudang Mountain
-
The Mountain
It lies deep in the Taihang Mountains, 70 kilometres northwest of Handan City, right at the junction of four provinces: Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan. Standing at an altitude of 1,437 metres, it is hailed as the king of all mountains in Wu’an and known as a cool summer resort for leisure and summer escape.
-
Two Deities
It is an ancient Taoist birthplace of the Wudang School, enshrining two great Taoist gods: Emperor Zhenwu and Zhang Sanfeng, the grandmaster of Tai Chi. This is why it is named Ancient Wudang Mountain, different from the well-known Wudang Mountain in Hubei.
-
Three Sacred Statuses
Based on abundant natural and cultural resources, the long-term development plan positions it as a mid-Wudang Taoist sacred land, a holy place of Wudang Tai Chi, and a famous tourist attraction covering the border of the four provinces.
-
Four Scenic Vistas
Four breathtaking natural views: sunrise, post-rain clouds, mountain-and-sea scenery, and sunset glow.
-
Five Peaks
The mountain boasts a unique landform with five connected peaks facing each other: North Summit, West Summit, Hang Summit, Yuannaoshan and Taohua Mountain.
Every peak is topped with a temple piercing the sky; statues of gods sit inside, while the temples float amid sea of clouds.
-
Six Zones
The mountain is divided into six scenic areas containing thirty-six attractions: Lower Temple Ring Road, Sanfeng City, South Heavenly Gate, Mountain Summit, Forest Park and West Mountain.
-
Seven Mansions of the North Dipper
The presiding deity here is Xuanwu, the Northern God of Taoism, corresponding to the Seven Northern Mansions among the Twenty-Eight Constellations.
-
Eight Natural Wonders
Endowed with extraordinary spiritual energy, the mountain has numerous rock formations shaped like humans and creatures. The eight most famous wonders are:
On the East Mountain: Yangshan Rock, Roc Spreading Wings, Divine Monkey Presenting Blessings, and Two Turtles Back-to-Back.
On the West Mountain: Chairman Mao Peak, Lu Xun Peak, Teapot Mountain, and Tai Chi Palm Rock
