Brief Introduction to Taihang Five-Finger Mountain

Taihang Five-Finger Mountain Scenic Area is located in She County on the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, covering an area of 20 square kilometres. Its main peak stands at 1,283 metres above sea level. The mountains are towering and elegant, covered with thick lush forests, famous for grandeur, wonder, peril and beauty.
The most amazing sight is a 3-kilometre mountain range naturally shaped into a giant reclining Buddha with lifelike contours, permeated with a peaceful and auspicious Buddhist aura.
In recent years, this formerly remote scenic area has opened to the public, becoming an ideal getaway for city dwellers to escape summer heat and seek quiet seclusion.
From National Highway 309, drive west past the county seat, cross the Qingzhang River Bridge, turn left onto the scenic access road. After a short drive through mountain valleys, you will see the unique ancient locust-tree-shaped main gate, and vehicles can drive directly into the resort.

Legend of Five-Finger Mountain

In ancient times, Guanyin Bodhisattva planned to travel north from Mount Putuo on her divine longevity turtle to attend Manjushri’s Dharma assembly at Wutai Mountain.
The North Star guided them to Ziwei Mountain in the Taihang range.
As Guanyin walked slowly, she saw green peaks shrouded in auspicious purple clouds with a golden Buddha light shining. Sakyamuni Buddha stood on the peak, admiring the magnificent scenery.
Guanyin landed and paid her respects.
The Buddha said:
“This land is blessed with beautiful mountains and spiritual plants, a natural sacred paradise. Our journey from the south is long. I wish to build a wayside temple here. What do you think?”
Guanyin replied:
“It would be excellent, so Buddhist monks travelling between north and south will have a place to rest.”
The Buddha nodded and raised his left hand slowly:
“The six peaks compete in beauty, just like bear ears reaching toward the sky. Let us name it Bear Ear Temple.”
Guanyin praised:
“Your wisdom is profound. The name perfectly fits the landform.”
Then she ordered her divine turtle:
“The Buddha and I will head for Wutai Mountain. You shall stay here and oversee the temple construction.” The turtle accepted the mission.
Guanyin then departed with the Buddha amid clouds.
After finishing the construction, the divine turtle loved this place so deeply that it transformed into a mountain and settled here forever.
The temple soon flourished. Local villagers came to pray for peace and blessings, and their prayers were always answered. The monastic community kept growing. At its peak, more than one thousand monks lived across 24 courtyards. With morning bells and evening drums, pilgrims streamed in endlessly, making it the most famous ancestral temple on the border of Shanxi, Hebei and Henan.
When you look at Five-Finger Mountain from north to south, the whole mountain forms the silhouette of a giant Buddha. Folktales say it is the Buddha resting on his way back from Wutai Mountain.
Local custom: If you feel unprepared for an exam, recruitment test or official assessment, you may “clutch the Buddha’s feet” for a last-minute blessing, which will bring you good luck and success.
This is the origin of the idiom “clutch the Buddha’s feet at the last moment”.
