Three-Day Tour of Charming Yuncheng

Upon arrival in Yuncheng, visit Yuncheng Salt Lake, known as "China’s Dead Sea", the only scenic spot in China comparable to the Dead Sea in Israel. The sightseeing lasts around 3 hours. After breakfast, drive 25 kilometres to Jiezhou Town and visit Guandi Temple (tour duration: about 1 hour). Dedicated to Guan Yu, the famous general of the Three Kingdoms Shu-Han regime, this ancestral temple of Guan Yu is the largest, best-preserved and most exquisitely constructed one in China, enjoying the reputation of "Top Military Temple".

Then head to Yongji to tour Pujiu Temple (tour duration: about 1 hour), the setting of the classical romance The Romance of the West Chamber. It is hailed as a sacred place of love because of the love story between Scholar Zhang and Cui Yingying. Its Yingying Pagoda ranks among China’s Four Great Echo Buildings and the World’s Eight Wondrous Pagodas.

Next, visit the precious cultural relic: the Iron Oxen of the Yellow River cast in the Kaiyuan reign of the Tang Dynasty (tour duration: about 1 hour). Climb the Stork Tower, one of China’s Four Great Ancient Towers (tour duration: about 1 hour). As the largest Tang-style imitative building in China, it became world-famous thanks to the poem On the Stork Tower written by Wang Zhihuan in the Tang Dynasty.

Check into the hotel after dinner. Overnight in Yuncheng.

After breakfast, drive 40 kilometres to Wanrong County and visit the Li Family Courtyard (tour duration: 2 hours). First built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, the complex mainly features traditional northern quadrangle courtyards with diversified architectural styles. Based on southern Shanxi folk dwellings, it also absorbs Huizhou architectural elements. Some courtyards adopt Japanese sliding doors and European Gothic designs. The complex perfectly integrates northern and southern Chinese styles as well as Chinese and Western elements, making it a rare masterpiece among vernacular residences across the country.

Later, visit the Joke Expo Park to experience the joy of the rich humour culture.
