Yujuan Well stands by the west riverbank of Gongyuan Road in Rugao Town. In 2004, the People’s Government of Rugao City listed it as a Rugao Municipal-level Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
Originally a domestic water well serving Zhongchan Temple in the Tang Dynasty, the well remained intact after the temple fell into ruins. Maotairan, a local scholar of the Ming Dynasty, bestowed upon it the name “Yujuan”, meaning “jade trickle”.
The drum-shaped marble well curb is a surviving relic from the Song Dynasty, relocated here from another well. Its exterior is carved with phoenix patterns. It measures 1.36 meters in outer diameter, 0.66 meters in inner diameter, 0.75 meters in belly diameter and 0.45 meters in height. The well wall was originally built with vertically laid bricks connected by mortise and tenon joints, and the well is approximately 10 meters deep.
