Yalu River Grand Canyon

Nestled on the southern foothills of Changbai Mountain, Yalu River Grand Canyon serves as the only passage leading up to Tianchi Lake. Formed as a massive fault trench during volcanic eruptions, this natural landscape has been sculpted over the past 300 years by rainwater erosion, incision and wind weathering.

Stretching 10 kilometers from north to south, 200 meters wide from east to west and reaching a depth of 170 meters, the canyon marks the source of the Yalu River, which overflows from Tianchi Lake. Lush green trees dot the valley, while grotesque, varied rock peaks line both banks, presenting a magnificent spectacle comparable to the well-known South and North Jinjiang Grand Canyons of Changbai Mountain.

At Gutou River, where two rivers of China and the DPRK converge, the towering Huya (Tiger Tooth) Peak surrounded by clusters of summits stands as the iconic highlight of the canyon. Yalu River Grand Canyon is truly a magnificent scroll painting bestowed upon humanity by nature.
