Daxitai River Scenic Area
Daxitai River Scenic Area is located 6 kilometers southeast of Huangsongpu Forest Farm on Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province, and it is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
The name "Daxitai" derives from the Manchu word "Xitaha", which refers to a type of cold-water fish. This river once abounded in such large-sized fish, hence the name Daxitai River.
At the river’s source lie nine artesian springs fed by underground water, collectively known as the Nine-Star Springs. The nine springs gush forth endlessly, yielding clear, sweet water rich in trace elements essential to the human body, making it ideal drinking water. The river stretches roughly 2 kilometers in winding course, dotted with numerous cascades and waterfalls. The falling water flows in neat tiers with distinct ripples, sending up mist and spray like light drizzle. Visitors may stroll along wooden boardwalks to admire the enchanting water features and reach out to touch the waterfalls, marveling at nature’s wonders.
Dense trees line both riverbanks, forming a cool, secluded woodland that represents the best-preserved primeval forest on Changbai Mountain. The forest boasts precious tree species including Korean pine, Manchurian linden, Chinese yew, mountain ash and Manchurian ash, alongside various wild mushrooms, wild fruits and herbaceous plants. Blending miraculous natural beauty with countless touching folk legends, the area is filled with fresh air high in negative oxygen ions, earning it the reputation of a "natural forest oxygen bar".
As the scenic spot closest to Changbai Mountain featuring the most intact primitive ecosystem, Daxitai River Scenic Area boasts thick, shady forests on both banks. It is an excellent destination for sightseeing, deep mountain exploration and secluded forest retreats.
Covering a total area of 11,660 hectares, the scenic area boasts diverse ecological landscapes and rare ancient trees: the Goddess Waterfall Group, Moon Bay Alpine Wetland, Bonsai Tree Cluster, Eight Brothers Poplars of the Yang Family, Century-Old Pine-Birch Love Trees, Mother Pine Tree, Ginseng-Guardian Divine Tree, Mountain God Altar, Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Stone, Honey Tasting Pavilion, Forest Canopy Viewpoint, and Secret Camps of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces.
Amid fierce competition in tourism development, Daxitai River Scenic Area underwent a stunning transformation. It launched a Forest Night Beautification Project and invested heavily in 2016 to build a dreamy forest light show themed around spring, summer, autumn and winter. Adopting 3D projection and special-effect LED lighting matched with immersive sound effects, the project turns the whole scenic zone into a glittering non-sleeping forest. It is China’s first original ecological scenic area offering all-day sightseeing, and the only attraction across the Changbai Mountain region open for night tours, soothing tourists’ sense of emptiness and boredom after dark on Changbai Mountain.
After nightfall, the entire forest valley shimmers with neon lights. Colorful cascades flow amid drifting mist, creating a dreamlike fairyland on earth. Escape the bustle of the day and step into the rainbow-hued river valley. Soak in soft music and fresh air, admire red cliffs and jade-like valleys, gaze at glowing colored waterfalls, appreciate ancient green pines, brush crimson rocks and green grass, and look up at the dazzling starry sky. Only then will you grasp the profound meaning of life, and feel utterly captivated by the stirring charm of the mysterious forest night.
