 Basic Overview
The world’s largest virgin populus euphratica (Euphrates poplar) forest is located along the Tarim River Basin in Xayar County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, belonging to the Tarim Populus Euphratica National Nature Reserve. Covering an area of about 3,800 square kilometers, this intact primitive poplar cluster earns the reputation of "the world’s most magnificent poplar corridor" and is the largest, most concentrated and best-preserved wild euphrates poplar community on Earth.
Ecological Characteristics
Populus euphratica is a typical drought-resistant, salt-tolerant ancient tree species adapted to arid desert climates. Known as the "desert hero tree", it can survive extreme high temperature, severe cold and high-salinity soil environments. Locals summarize its vitality with a vivid saying: live for a thousand years when alive, stand upright for a thousand years after death, and remain unrotten for a thousand years after falling.
The forest acts as a critical ecological barrier: it fixes drifting sand, conserves water sources, regulates regional microclimate and maintains the fragile desert wetland ecosystem of the Tarim Basin, protecting the surrounding oasis and residential settlements from desert expansion. The reserve also shelters dozens of wild animals including wild camels, goitered gazelles and various migratory water birds, forming a complete desert ecological chain.
Landscape & Tourism Value
1. Seasonal Scenery
Mid-October to early November (prime viewing season): The poplar leaves turn bright golden yellow, forming boundless golden woods against the blue sky, winding Tarim River and brown desert dunes. The reflection of poplars on the river surface creates stunning panoramic views, drawing photographers and nature lovers globally.
Summer: Green poplar foliage brings cool shade amid the arid desert; winter presents a solemn, stark scene with frosted branches covered by thin snow.
2. Cultural & Tourist Highlights
Apart from natural scenery, the area carries the historical footprint of the ancient Silk Road. Integrated with Uygur folk customs, desert river views and yurt experiences, it develops eco-tourism, photography tours and desert hiking projects. Multiple viewing platforms and wooden boardwalks have been built for visitors to appreciate the primitive forest without damaging the original ecological environment.
Protection Status
Listed as a national-level nature reserve in China, the primitive poplar forest is under systematic ecological management: river water regulation, artificial water replenishment for withered poplar woods and strict access control are implemented to guard this irreplaceable primitive desert forest resource. It is not only a precious natural heritage of China but also a vital global gene bank of desert woody plants.
