 Basic definition
Ancient karst landforms refer to the rock landscapes shaped by long-term chemical dissolution, erosion and deposition of soluble rocks (mainly limestone, dolomite and gypsum) under ancient geological environments. Formed millions to hundreds of millions of years ago during paleogeological periods, these landforms have been preserved through crustal movement, sediment coverage and later tectonic transformation, presenting varied, bizarre and irregular morphological features different from modern karst.
Formation mechanism
Carbonate rocks dissolve slowly when contacting rainwater and groundwater containing carbon dioxide. In long geologic history, alternating humid and arid paleoclimates, frequent crustal uplift and subsidence, plus river undercutting and weathering, jointly remodeled the original rock layers. After being buried by strata for a long time, some ancient karst outcrops again due to mountain uplift, retaining abundant paleo-karst marks such as fossil caves, paleo-corrosion grooves and buried solution funnels.
Typical weird morphological types & features
Peak forest & peak cluster karst
Sharp, tower-shaped stone peaks gather in clusters or scatter independently. With steep cliffs and mottled corrosion textures on rock surfaces, they form rugged peak landscapes widely seen in southern China karst regions.
Karst caves & speleothems
Massive underground cave systems are decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, stone curtains, stone flowers and stone pillars. Driven by ancient dripping water, these deposits grow into fantastic shapes resembling animals, plants and human figures. Some ancient caves preserve fossil sediments and paleo-river traces inside.
Tiankeng & dolines
Huge circular or elliptical negative terrain formed by the overall collapse of ancient underground cave roofs. Surrounded by sheer rock walls, deep valleys and underground rivers run at the bottom, showing spectacular and uncanny geomorphological outlines.
Karst stone forests
Dense needle-shaped, blade-shaped and columnar stone stalks stand crisscrossed. Long-term differential dissolution carves the rock masses into jagged, grotesque stone pillars of different heights.
Ancient karst gorges & stone arches
Underground river channels evolve into surface canyons after stratum collapse. Natural stone arches and karst bridges are formed by residual rock masses after partial cave collapse, with peculiar hollow structures.
Geological & scientific value
Ancient karst strata record paleoclimate change, ancient hydrological conditions and crustal evolution tracks. The diversified and strange landform assemblages are not only precious natural geological heritage, but also popular resources for geotourism, cave exploration and popular science research. Most well-preserved ancient karst landscapes are designated as geoparks and nature reserves for protection and sustainable sightseeing development.
