Haiyue Rock

Haiyue Rock is located in Shaxi Town on the southern foothills of Liangshan Mountain, accessible directly via a winding mountain road branching off the Zhangzhou-Yunxiao Provincial Highway. The scenic area covers approximately 3 square kilometers.
Haiyue Rock Temple stands as an exemplary masterpiece of southern grotto architecture. Boasting a long history, profound cultural heritage and magnificent natural scenery, it ranks among Zhangpu’s most celebrated scenic spots of both ancient and modern times. It has been designated a Provincial-level Key Cultural Relic Protection Site and included in the Great Dictionary of China’s Tourist Attractions.
First built in the Southern Song Dynasty, the temple underwent two expansions during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its main complex consists of three stone structures: Haiyue Rock Hall, Liangshan God Shrine and Danyun Chamber. Constructed against a natural cave, the entire temple is roofed by a single massive stone slab measuring 31 meters long and 13 meters wide, with the main hall enshrining Sakyamuni Buddha.
Every Mid-Autumn Festival in the eighth lunar month, moonlight shines directly onto the chest of the Buddha statue, forming a stunning natural wonder. An ancient poem depicts this sight:
"Mist from the sea congeals into clouds that take the form of Arhats;
Moonlight shimmers on water, whose glow reflects the Bodhi heart."
Ten core scenic spots surround the temple, including Luojing Realm, Zhizhi Cave, Zhuoshi Bridge, Merit Spring and Wuzhu Realm. More than 60 cliff stone carvings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties scatter across the hillsides, among which the carved stone relief of Guanyin, the cursive poem about Merit Spring by Liu Tinghui of the Ming Dynasty, and the Sanskrit Six-Syllable Mantra are the most renowned.
Haiyue Rock Temple backs onto towering Vajra Mountain. The surrounding landscape features jagged exotic rock formations, ancient dense trees, singing birds, fragrant blossoms and ever-shifting sea of mist. The sky alternates between cloudless clarity and soft swirling fog, lending the place the ethereal charm of Penglai Immortalland.
Leaning against the balustrade in front of the temple, visitors behold rolling, precipitous mountain ridges. To the east stretches the sea dotted with sailing vessels and scattered islands. The winding Zhangjiang River glimmers like a silk ribbon amid embroidered farmlands. To the south, Shifan Pagoda rises like a firm pillar standing firm amid the current. To the north, Vajra Summit and Jade Maiden Peak atop Liangshan Mountain come into view.
Hot springs with abundant outflow and a water temperature of 50°C lie within the scenic zone, making it an ideal destination for hydrotherapy. At the back mountain sits a reservoir covering around 200 mu of water surface, alongside a spectacular natural waterfall suitable for developing a small hydropower station.
The planned development area spans 4,500 mu, with core projects including an ancient temple pilgrimage zone, hot spring wellness resort, villa vacation quarter and eco-tourism zone. The total projected investment stands at approximately 150 million RMB
