 Basic Overview
Known as Wild Duck Lake, Kekesuli Lake is reputed as the Wetland Kingdom hidden on the northern Xinjiang grassland可可托海世.... Nestled in the Turhong Basin of Fuyun County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, it lies 23 km away from downtown Fuyun and serves as a core scenic spot of Koktokay Global Geopark, graded as a 4A-level tourist attraction in China. Its Kazakh name “Kekesuli” translates to “whirlpool”, depicting the gentle ripples rolling across the lake surface. Sitting at an altitude of 1,333 meters, the lake covers a water area of 1.78 km² with an average water depth of only 2 meters, fed by meltwater from the Altai Mountains and belonging to the water system of the Irtysh River, the only river in China flowing into the Arctic Ocean可可托海世....
Geologic Origin & Unique Landscape
Formed by fault subsidence triggered by the massive 8-magnitude earthquake in 1931, Kekesuli is a natural marsh wetland born from geological movements可可托海世.... Its most fantastic feature is more than 20 reed floating islands scattered over the lake. These reeds grow afloat on the water surface without fixed roots, drifting freely with wind currents. The lake view shifts constantly as floating reeds wander back and forth, creating ever-changing picturesque scenes throughout the day.
The lake water is crystal clear and jade-blue, mirroring white clouds, rolling mountains and boundless surrounding grasslands perfectly. Against the rugged backdrop of the Altai rocky mountains, the soft wetland scenery forms a sharp visual contrast, just like a bright sapphire embedded on the vast pastoral land.
Ecology & Wildlife Habitat
Kekesuli is an important stopover and breeding paradise for migratory birds along the Central Asian bird migration route. From spring to autumn, thousands of wild ducks, white swans, grey cranes, egrets, gulls and wild geese gather here for feeding and reproduction. Visitors can watch water birds gliding over the ripples and fish swimming leisurely in shallow water, presenting a vivid poetic scene of gulls soaring above the water, fish darting beneath the waves. Surrounding lakeshores are covered with lush grass and wild flowers, where flocks of cattle and sheep graze leisurely, together with Kazakh yurts curling with cooking smoke, outlining a peaceful frontier pastoral scroll.
