The Kaqun Canal Headworks is the main water diversion project on the Yarkand River in Xinjiang, and it is also the largest river-blocking water diversion hub in Xinjiang at present. Its designed diversion discharge is 340 cubic meters per second, designed flood discharge is 7,890 cubic meters per second, and the designed irrigated area covers 5 million mu.
Built on an S-shaped reach of the Yarkand River, this river-blocking diversion hub features water intake on both banks and multi-stage sediment flushing. Its layout integrates the structural characteristics of Dujiangyan and Fell type projects.
The project is characterized by the combination of water diversion from the left and right banks, the integration of water intake at natural bends and artificially constructed bends, as well as the coordination of flood release, sediment flushing and water abstraction.
The main structures of the hub have been completed and put into operation. Its operational performance meets the design requirements, yielding remarkable social and economic benefits.
