Shuidonggou, as one of the earliest Palaeolithic excavations of cultural sites of China, is acclaimed as “The Birthplace of China’s Prehistoric Archaeology,” and “Historical Evidence of Cultural Exchanges between East and West,” and was listed as “one of the most significant archaeological discoveries among the 100 Chinese civilization sites”. The site is also known as one of the national key cultural relics protection units, national 4A-level scenic spot, national geological park and awarded Silver Prize as one of the 50 places well worth visiting by foreign tourists.

Shuidonggou is also a garden in northern China for architectures for military defense, including the Ming Great Wall, beacon towers, castles, trenches and warning stations. Inside Shuidonggou area, visitors will be overwhelmed by the wriggling Great Wall, erect beacon towers, mysterious ancient castles and meandering and deep trenches, all reminding us heroic scenes described in a poem “Soldiers gallop with spears in hand while generals chase enemies with a sword.”

Shuidonggou is located in the southern margin of Erdos plateau and the Yadan-Landform created by nature makes here vigorous, spectacular and barren. After thousands of years of wind and sand erosion, it boasts over 20 astonishing and splendid landscapes, such as Ghost Town, Lying Camel Ridge, Breathtaking Cliff, Cloud-broken Valley and Strange Willow Gully.

Innovation is the driving force for the development of Shuidonggou and it is just like culture is the soul of Shuidonggou. There are many relic sites in China but Shuidonggou ranks the first in terms of integrating innovative artistic, literary and high-tech innovative elements with the visiting function of traditional museums. Archaeological Museum, by integrating the application of the most advanced technologies of sound, light, electricity and adjustable seismic platform, presents factual fishing and hunting life of ancient humans 30,000 years ago, production scenes of chipped stone tools, and thundering disastrous scenes including torrential downpours, devastating floods and earthquakes, in form of 270° ultra-large half landscape painting, real scenes and spectra vision, which are beautiful, lifelike and astonishing. Artistic conception brings tourists into the life scenes of 30,000 years ago. 30,000 years is distant but in Shuidonggou Archaeological Museum, time is no longer a problem. High-tech helps you to travel through 30,000 years in the twinkling of an eye. The museum starts a form of museum in China and it is the only and largest indoor museum where audiences can fell personally on the scene, a major highlight in Shuidonggou.

The wonder of Shuidonggou lies in that it was also an important place for military defense in the border area of Ming Dynasty apart from a place where ancient humans lived and multiplied 30, 000 years ago. There are many places in China where lies the Great Wall yet the three-dimensional military defense system combining Great Wall, tranches, castles, precipitous canyon and Soldier Hiding Caves scattered around the canyon is only included in Shuidonggou. These Soldier Hiding Caves are magnificent and well-designed. With fully-equipped facilities including tunnels, mechanisms, hidden weapons, watchtowers, arsenals, wells, generals’ lounges, conference rooms and kitchens, you may personally visit and feel the thrills and excitement of tunnel warfare in Ming Dynasty, and experience and understand with zero distance the brutality of wars and intelligence of defending troops of Ming, greatly satisfying tourists’ curiosity. Soldier Hiding Caves have become another spotlight of Shuidonggou.

Visiting prehistoric sites, enjoying waterfront Great Wall, traveling through forests and canyons, sightseeing frontier fortresses and castles and touring Soldier Hiding Caves, are all done in Shuidonggou, a tourist attraction that fascinates both Chinese and foreign tourists.
