Ningxia Huoshizhai (literally meaning fire rock village) National Geological Park is named because the mountains are dark red like burning flame balls especially under the shade of green trees. In spring and summer, the hillsides are profuse with flowers, bees and butterflies, which is full of vitality. In between the sparse trees, there are arrow bamboos, which add a bit of southern beauty to the northern landscape.

There are too many things to see in Huoshizhai: purple cliffs and towering rocks on the Loess Plateau, which are of a great variety of shapes and postures and full of power and grandeur. The red cliff, green trees and blue sky, which complement with each other, constitute a colorful natural picture. Some hills look like pyramid, some ancient castle, and others are said to be like a bear, a lion, and a willing ox...... different forms can be seen from different angles.

The landform in Huoshizhai is named Danxia landform. These huge and thick red sandstone and conglomerates belong to the tertiary red bed of cretaceous geological layer, which have ornamental value. Its appearance on the Loess Plateau is more surprising, which is a vivid proof that the big world is really full of wonders. Stone forests in the southern China are dense, which are formed due to long-term erosion of limestone by the water. While the stone forests in Huoshizhai are scattered on the hills within 98 square kilometers. Each one of them can be treated as a scene, rough and mysterious, which would lead to the reverie of visitors. The rays of sun slanting in mornings and dusk are very brilliant. Many enthusiasts of photography and painting would linger here, because just a shutter or a sketch would render a good work. The Danxia landforms in Huoshizhai and Zhangye have produced the two grandest Danxia scenes in the northern China, which are both included in China’s eight spots of Danxia landform.
