Ecological City

In recent years great emphasis has been put on the greening of the city by local government with a number of parks being build and opened to the public. The projects that have been finished are the construction of Zhijiabu Park and the Eastern City Wall Belt Park, the landscaping of Wenying Lake Park, Yuhe River, Shili River and the construction of the Kouquan Botanic Garden. So far there are more than ten parks in the Datong urban area. The completion of these greening projects have greatly improved the ecological environment of the city and at the same time contributed to the urban landscape. On 14^th January 2014 Datong was proclaimed as ‘National Garden City’ by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

Wenying Lake Park

Wenying Lake is a natural lake located near Baideng Mountain (present name Mapu Mountain) and Cailiang Mountain. The storage capacity of the lake is 6.8 million cubic meters. There are more than one hundred types of evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and ground cover. With Wengying Lake as its center, Wenying Lake Park covers an area of 6,86 million square meters. The park is constituted of several landscape ecological function areas, namely city square, shopping street, culture gallery and forest park. It has become one of the popular public leisure areas of the city.

Yuhe Ecological Park

Yuhe Ecological Park is built along the Yuhe River, the ancient city moat. It is 5.5 kilometers long from south to north and from 500 to 800 meters in width from east to west. Covering an area of 670,000 square meters, Yuhe Ecological Park consists of seven areas which are a children's playground, a cultural and entertainment area, sports and water recreation areas, a garden design area, a leisure area and older citizens outdoor activity area.
