Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding

  Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding, located at Futoushan (Mount Axe) in Chengdu northern suburbs, has become one of the domestic main base for the conservation of rare and endangered wild animals. The animals here include Giant Panda, Lesser Panda, the Black-necked Crane, the White Stock, the White Swan, the Black Swan, the Wild Goose, the Mandarin Duck, Peacock etc. In its artificial ecological vegetation composed of more than 300 species of higher plants in 68 families inhabit more than 90 species of wild birds in 29 families. In the base, a panda ecological park has been built, where various kinds of rare and endangered animals leisurely enjoy green bamboo, trees, flowers, birds and fresh air.

  Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding have high level experts and technical personnel and owns domestic first-rate technical equipment. It has kept transverse or longitudinal exchange and cooperation with many international and domestic research institutes and universities, and achieved several items of break-through progress in the basic research and application research fields of rare and endangered animals including Giant Pandas. The project for the construction of the Giant Panda “GenBank” has been implemented. Five years later, with the completion of the gaint panda “Genbank”the dream of continuing the family bloodline of the Giant Panda will be a reality.

  Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding simulates the field ecosystem of Giant Pandas in a park that integrates the natural wild, mountains and beautiful artificial landscapes and is an ideal site for family tourism and knowledge enrichment. The dining room, tea garden and recreation center of the base's Service Department will provide you with catering, accommodation and leisure recreation service.

  Chengdu Giant Panda Museum

  Chengdu Gaint Panda Museum is sited in Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base at Futoushan (Mount Axe) in Chengdu northern suburbs and was built in 1992. Now, it has three exhibition halls that are both independent and very correlated, namely, the Giant Panda Hall, the Butterfly Hall and the Vertebrate Hall, with a total area of nearly 4,000 square meters, forming a comprehensive museum that displays the human understanding and research of Giant Pandas under the theme of conservation and protection.

  On display are more than 800 varying pictures with captions, 12,450 animal specimens in 2,140 varieties produced in Sichuan, including over 150 specimens of Mammals in more than 90 varieties, over 600 specimen of birds in more than 300 varieties, over 120 specimen of reptiles, over 110 specimen of amphibians, over 230 specimen of fishes, over 10,000 specimen of butterflies and other insects in more than 1,150 varieties, fossil and model specimens. In addition, the museum has ten thousand specimens and several thousand monographs and papers.

  Chengdu Giant Panda Nature Reserves:

  Anzihe (Anzi River) Nature Reserve

  Sichuan Anzihe Nature Reserve lies in the middle of Longmen Mountain which is the southeast branch of Qionglai Mountain range, in the mountain valley area at the west edge of Sichuan Basin and at the northwest of Chongzhou City, Sichuan Province, with geographical coordinates of 103°7''-103°17'' east longitude and 30°43''-30°51'' north altitude. It borders on Aba Tibetan - Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and Wenchuan County on the north to northwest, and is surounded by natural forest, the artificial forest and the collective forest of Laopengzi Group, Yanfeng Village, Goujia Township on the east, extending to the mountain ridge to the east of Xiaojiagou and Laopengzi. As a connecting corridor between Wolong and Fengtongzhai National Nature Reserves and Heshuihe Nature Reserve, it well joins the south and north Giant Panda habitats of Qionglai Mountain range that have a total area of 3,534.5 square kilometers, hereby ensuring a free exchange of the internal gene of the Giant Panda population in this region.

  Baishuihe (White River) National Nature Reserve

  The reserve lies in Pengzhou City in the north of Chengduo plain, which is a nature reserve for rare and endangered animals and plants such as the Giant Panda and their ecological environment. It was set up in 1996 under the approval of Pengzhou Municipal People’s Government; became a provincial reserve in 1999 under the approval of Sichuan Provincial People’s Government; and a national nature reserve in 2002 under the approval of the State Council. With a total area of 301.5 square kilometers, rich animal and plant resource, well-preserved ecological environment and long-standing humane history, it is an ecological tourism resort integrating mountain, water, ecology, air, culture, biodiversity and geological scenes.

  Heshuihe (Black River) Nature Reserve

  Sichuan Dayi Heshuihe Nature Reserve (hereafter referred to as the reserve) is located at the west edge of Sichuan Basin and is in the transition zone from Chengdou Plain to Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. On the north and northwest, it is surounded by Chengzhou City and Wenchuan administrative borders and adjacent to Wolong and the Anzihe reserves. It is 19.5 kilometers long from north to south and 38.5 kilometers wide from east to west and has a total area of 39,805 hectare.

  The reserve has superior natural conditions and a large virgin forest. Under the influence of the monsoon climate, the warm-wet flow in the summer go deeply along the river valley, benefiting the southern animal population to expand north and higher. The statistics show that there are more than 220 species of vertebrate.

  Longxi - Hongkou National Nature Reserve

  The reserve is located in the north of Doujiangyan (Doujiang Dam) City. It is bordered at Wenchuan County in Aba Prefecture on the northwest, Baishuihe National Nature Reserve on the east and Loingchi Town and Hongkou Township of Doujiangyan City on the south. The reserve is only 60 kilometers from Chengdu urban area and lies in the transition zone from Chengdou Plain to Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with geographical coordinates of 103°32''-103°43'' east longitude and 31°04''-31°22'' north latitude.

  Longxi - Hongkou National Nature Reserve was set up in 1997 under the approval of the State Council as a nature reserve for forest and wild animals, with the conservation of rare and endangered wild animals and plants including Giant Pandas, Golden Monkeys, Takin, the Chinese Dove Tree and Katsura Tree and the forest ecological system as its main task. It has a reserve area of 310 square kilometers, including a core area of 203 square kilometers. It has a peripheral protection belt area of 117 square kilometers, forest area of 261.95 square kilometers, and 84.5%forest coverage.
