Xianghuoyan Scenic Area
Xianghuoyan Scenic Area is located in Hefeng Bouyi and Miao Township of Kaiyang County, 50 kilometers away from Guiyang and 20 kilometers from Kaiyang County Seat. Stretching from Youyi Bridge at the border of Kaiyang and Xiuwen Counties to Guantangkou where Guangdong River meets Qingshui River, it covers a total area of about 20.7 square kilometers with a full length of 12 kilometers, among which 8 kilometers have been developed. When autumn arrives, the mountains are blanketed in red leaves, making it a perfect destination for photographers to collect creative materials.
Renowned for its magnificent and unique canyon scenery, Xianghuoyan is an ideal spot for outdoor hiking and sightseeing. The forest coverage rate of the scenic area exceeds 80%, boasting high-quality tourist resources and diverse types of attractions. In spring, ten miles of azaleas bloom in full splendor; in autumn, maple leaves blaze all over the mountains. It features natural wonders including Xianghuoyan Rock, Erdong Natural Arch, Tuyun Swallow Cave, underground streams at Daba Pass, Xianghuoyan Waterfall, Golden Rooster Lake, Red Maple Forest, Azalea Grove, Yuguanmen Canyon and Luoxia Rock, as well as cultural sites such as the Chain Suspension Bridge, Yangsen Mansion, Water Mill and Zha Ba Ethnic Scenic Zone. Brief Introduction to Major Attractions
Tuyun Cave
A masterpiece of underground karst landforms with a total length of 1.3 kilometers. The cave contains interconnected grottos and crystal-clear underground rivers, adorned with countless vivid stalactites and stalagmites in fantastic shapes. At the cave entrance, swallows flit back and forth under dense shady trees with cool breezes blowing, and clouds and mist often billow in and out of the cave, creating a spectacular sight.
Xianghuoyan Divine Niche
A gigantic sheer cliff formed by violent crustal movements, standing over 100 meters high and stretching 500 meters wide. The cliff face resembles a grand shrine, inside which natural stone veins form the silhouette of a seated Buddha, solemn and exquisitely shaped beyond human craftsmanship. All visitors who chance upon it are left in awe, earning it the title of "The No.1 Divine Niche Under Heaven".
Grand Xianghuoyan Waterfall
Facing the Divine Niche from afar, the waterfall boasts a total drop of around 250 meters and a width of 40 meters. Boasting an elegant shape, the river plunges vertically from the top of the fault cliff like layered silver curtains, cascading down in folded tiers into a deep pool below. Flanked by steep cliffs shaded by woods, occasional trickling side springs add extra delicate charm to the landscape.
Yuguanmen Canyon
A prime example of canyon scenery in central Guizhou. The canyon is deep with rapid currents, enclosed by towering vertical cliffs that narrow the river channel. Ancient trees overhang the gorge, leaving only a thin strip of sky overhead, hence its local name "Yuguanmen (Jade Gate Pass)". The age-old, mysterious valley houses a series of scenic spots including Tiger Leaping Dragon Shoal, Bronze Drum Pond, Three-Tier Rock and Ganoderma Waterfall.
Yangsen Mansion
Representative of the distinctive architectural style of central Guizhou from the late Qing to early Republic of China period, it stands as the most unique cultural relic in Xianghuoyan. It served as the summer official residence of Zhou Xicheng, Provincial Governor of Guizhou during the Republic of China era, and got its name because the warlord Yangsen once spent his summer here with his wife.
Golden Rooster Lake
A hidden alpine canyon lake tucked deep in the mountains, named for its shape resembling a golden rooster. Flocks of mandarin ducks often swim on the water, painting a poetic and delightful scene. When boating on the blue waves, visitors can admire rock walls covered with primitive stone carvings and natural murals.
Ticket Fees
- Standard ticket for Xianghuoyan Scenic Area: ¥88 per person (includes boat ticket and personal accident insurance); discounted ticket: ¥50 per person.
- Half-price tickets are available for students, active-duty military personnel, seniors aged 60–70 and minors upon presentation of valid identity documents.
- Free admission for the disabled, children under 14 and seniors over 70 with valid certificates; only a ¥10 boat ticket is required.
Public Transport
- Direct coaches to Xianghuoyan depart from the tourist bus station opposite Qianling Park, enabling same-day return trips.
- Take a coach from Jinyang Bus Station to Hefeng Township for ¥15 per person, then transfer to a local vehicle to the scenic area for ¥2 per person; the whole journey takes around 2 hours.
- Travel to Nanjiang Grand Canyon Scenic Area, where shuttle buses to Xianghuoyan are available.
