Jushan Mountain was originally named Yiyang Mountain. Later, it was renamed Geyi Mountain because Ge Hong refined elixirs here. Starting from the Ming Dynasty, it came to be known as Jushan Mountain due to its massive mountain massif.
Located at the northernmost tip of Gupi Town in Suining County, Jushan Mountain stretches 3 kilometers from north to south and 1.3 kilometers from east to west, serving as the boundary mountain between Suining County and Pizhou City.
Spanning 27 li in circumference, the mountain features four parallel peaks. The western peak is the highest, standing at an altitude of 214.7 meters. It ranks as the tallest peak in northern Jiangsu, second only to Yuntai Mountain in Lianyungang. Constantly shrouded in rosy clouds and mist, it is named White Cloud Peak.
An imperial palace built for Emperor Kangxi sits atop the summit. Outside the palace lie Gexian Cave and Gexian Well, which are said to be relics where Ge Hong, a Taoist theorist, physician and master alchemist of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, practiced Taoism and refined immortality elixirs.
In 1995, with strong support from the county Party committee and government, Gupi Town mobilized resources from the whole town to construct Zongshan Chan Temple. The temple later inherited the orthodox Chan lineage from Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, the cradle of Chan Buddhism. Every year, swarms of pilgrims gather on Jushan Mountain during the Buddha Bathing Festival on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, as well as the Qingming Festival and Spring Festival. At present, it is the top destination for local residents of the county to climb mountains and worship Buddha.
