Xiaobanshen Han Tomb in Horinger
An Eastern Han ancient tomb was unearthed in Xiaobanshen Village, Xindianzi Township, Horinger County, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1972. The tomb consists of three main chambers (front, middle and rear) and three side chambers, with a total length of approximately 20 metres.
More than 50 murals and over 250 inscribed captions decorate the tomb walls, vaulted ceiling and both sides of the passageway. To date, this site yields the Han Dynasty tomb murals with the richest volume, most diverse themes and largest number of accompanying inscriptions ever discovered through Chinese archaeological excavations. The murals vividly depict class structures, ethnic interactions and social life in multi-ethnic northern border regions during the Eastern Han Dynasty.
According to the mural scenes and inscribed captions, the tomb occupant held the highest official post dispatched by the Eastern Han court to northern mixed-ethnic territories: the Colonel Protector of the Wuhuan with Imperial Credentials.
The murals cover a wide range of subjects:
Processions of carriages and horses illustrating the tomb owner’s official career and successive promotions;
Renderings of cities and official mansions where the deceased once served;
Depictions of elite aristocratic life, including feasting, song and dance performances, and variety shows;
Scenes of Eastern Han productive labour: farming, manor life, horse herding and cattle raising;
Portraits of everyday society: costumes, hairstyles and facial features of ethnic minorities, auspicious omens, plus narrative paintings of virtuous sages, loyal ministers, filial sons and chaste women.
