Heralded as the sister of the famed West Lake, Xixi National Wetland Park is the last remaining example of traditional water towns of Hangzhou that once spread across the West Lake Basin. It features a maze of crisscrossing creeks, unspoiled marshlands, ancient Persimmon trees and an expansive sea of reeds. Its mysterious and sacred waters have set the scene for two famous Chinese classic novels: Dream of Red Chamber and Outlaws of the Marsh. During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), it saw over 36 thatched huts and convents surfaced. Though most of them did not pass the trial of time and fell into ruins, Autumn Snow Buddhist Convent stands there alone in all its imposing glory and is a place to seek contemplation. To enjoy the rustic flavor of this retreat, you can either paddling or strolling. Recent additions to the park include new arched stone bridges, interlacing walkways, exotic museums, chic restaurants, quaint tea houses, and even bars, clubs and hotels. Spring and summer will see Flower Festival (Huazhao Festival) and Dragon Boat Racing Festival take place respectively. Just see how this tranquil getaway is transformed into a riot of sounds, colors and scents. The visual spectacle and carnival atmosphere are things you do not want to miss.
