Nan'ao was anciently known as Pomegranate City and White City, and pomegranate flowers serve as a symbol of Nan'ao. On Nan'ao Island, only Shen'ao supports large-scale pomegranate cultivation. Thanks to its moist, rich soil and abundant water resources, Shen'ao is home to a unique rare variety — rock sugar pomegranate.
When you cut open a round, green rock sugar pomegranate, you will find its arils crystal clear like rock sugar, smooth and translucent just as pearls and agates. Its juice can clear lung heat and moisten the respiratory tract, delivering an unparalleled taste. To this day, rock sugar pomegranate remains a standout brand among the island’s agricultural products. At present, Shen'ao rock sugar pomegranates are sold far to various Southeast Asian countries.
Pomegranates grown in Shen'ao fall into two categories: edible and medicinal. One variety bears white blossoms, known as Ba Tuo pomegranate. Nan'ao Herbal Medicine, published in 1970, records: "Its roots consolidate essence and tonify the kidneys; its flowers clear heat and relieve coughs; externally applied, it astringes tissues and stops bleeding."
