Nuodeng Village is about 170 km northwest of DaLi, the village was established during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and for centuries rode to frame on the back of the salt trade - famous for its high quality salt, which was hauled out of the ground from wells as saline slush and then fire evaporated leaving the pure salt.
Since “modern” times, bringing with it the easy accessibility of salt, Nuodeng has fallen from grace and has since been negated to the “backwaters” of Yunnan.
But this is what makes Nuodeng so fascinating a place - the area is steeped in history, surrounded by natural and man made wonders, though the village itself has seen better days.
Perched on the shear side of the mountain, the village homes can be dated back to the late Ming (1368-1644 AD) or early Qing Dynasties (1644-1911 AD) designed in the Bai traditional mud “brick” style, with a court yard surrounded by 3 two level buildings and a front/side “gate/entrance.
