Known as the Rainbow Nation, South Africa lies at the southern tip of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean. It boasts Africa’s most complete tourism infrastructure and diversified landscapes, ranging from vast savannas, wild canyons and rugged coastlines to ancient forests. Integrated with indigenous African, Dutch, British, Malay and Indian cultures, it perfectly combines wild safari experience, coastal leisure, world-famous wine estates and profound human history, making it an all-round top tourist destination in Africa.
Best Travel Period
Wildlife Safari (Kruger Park): May – September (dry season)
Sparse vegetation forces wild animals to gather around water sources, greatly improving the viewing rate of the Big Five (lion, African elephant, rhino, leopard, Cape buffalo). The weather is cool and pleasant for field exploration.
Cape Town & Garden Route: November – February (local summer)
Clear sunny weather fits mountain climbing, beach activities and coastal driving. Whale watching is available from September to November in Hermanus.
April and October are mild shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and high travel cost performance.
Core Tourist Attractions
Kruger National Park
South Africa’s largest wildlife reserve and world-famous safari destination, home to over 500 bird species and 147 mammals. Visitors can drive self-guided tours or join professional off-road safari, together with Blyde River Canyon and Sun City Resort as classic wild travel combinations.
Cape Town – City & Coastal Landmarks
Table Mountain is the city symbol, with a 360° revolving cable car overlooking the whole city and bay. Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope mark the southernmost tip of Africa where two oceans meet. Boulders Penguin Colony and Seal Island bring lovely marine wildlife views. Visitors can also visit V&A Waterfront, colorful Bo-Kaap District, Robben Island and historic Stellenbosch wine valleys for wine tasting.
Garden Route
A 500-kilometer iconic coastal highway stretching from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth, featuring beaches, lakes, ancient forests and coastal towns. Knysna is famous for fresh oysters and lagoon scenery, while Tsitsikamma National Park provides forest hiking and suspension bridge sightseeing for self-driving lovers.
Humanistic Cities
Johannesburg (City of Gold) features Apartheid Museum and Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site; Durban offers tropical seaside scenery and rich Indian cultural customs.
Local Cuisine
Braai (South African barbecue with Boerewors sausage), Bobotie (national curried minced meat dish), Biltong dried beef, slow-cooked Potjiekos and Malva Pudding are classic local food, matched with high-quality South African wine and fresh seafood.
Visa & Travel Notes
Chinese tourists can apply for electronic ETA visa online in advance; no visa on arrival is available. Direct flights operate from Beijing/Shenzhen to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Domestic flights connect major cities, and self-driving is recommended for scenic routes (traffic keeps to the left). Avoid walking alone in remote urban areas at night; strictly follow guides inside wildlife reserves for safety.
