5. The Chu Great Wall
The Chu Great Wall – The Inner Great Wall
The ancient Great Wall left by our ancestors stands as an eternal monument for all Chinese people. Historians and scholars confirm that the Chu Great Wall, built around 688 BC, is China’s oldest section of the Great Wall.
Known as the Inner Great Wall, it features an outer rampart and an inner city wall, forming a nested city structure. Along the mountain slopes inside the inner city lie the foundations of numerous stone houses.
From east to west on three hilltops one kilometre south of the stone city stand three stone fortresses: Wangjia Stockade, Huajia Stockade and Lujia Stockade, each with a beacon tower at its highest point.
Simple stone ramparts wind along mountain ridges, partially hidden by thick forests.
The outer wall is a single barrier topped with remaining crenellations for defenders, with a footpath inside. Some embrasures still have observation holes.
The entire wall, city gates and castles were built with dry-stone stacking, no mortar was used between stones, retaining a primitive architectural style.
6. Green Dragon Mountain
Green Dragon Mountain – Dinosaur Egg Fossil Group
The Green Dragon Mountain Reserve lies on the eastern end of the Qinling Fold Belt, featuring steep cliffs, deep valleys, mountain streams, waterfalls, exotic flowers and natural caves.
Long-term weathering has shaped rolling low hills here, with an average altitude of 220 metres and a relative height difference of roughly 50 metres.
It preserves geological records spanning more than 1.8 billion years of vicissitudes, with abundant, rare and diverse relics.
Blessed with rich natural resources and outstanding people, Green Dragon Mountain is regarded as one of the cradles of the Chinese nation, the birthplace of Han culture, and the famous "Hometown of Dinosaurs".
The fossil group covers Wolong Mountain, Hongzhaizi, Green Dragon Mountain, Tumiaoling, Moshigou and Zhuanggou. It is distinguished by large quantities, diverse species, concentrated distribution, shallow burial and excellent original preservation.
One nest unearthed contains as many as 61 dinosaur eggs, a rare find across the globe.
7. Fulong Mountain
Fulong Mountain – The Back Garden of Shiyan Auto City
Originally named Saiwudang, meaning "Surpassing Wudang", it earned its name because its peak towers higher than the main summit of Wudang Mountain. Its scenery is comparable to the famous Taoist mountain.
Stretching ridges are covered in lush green woods. Fresh mountain air fills your lungs. Clear blue water, green mountains and cloud-streaked skies purify your mood.
You walk beneath primeval forests dotted with azaleas, beside gurgling brooks and emerald pools. The scenery is absolutely enchanting.
Standing on the mountain ridge facing the wind, you see layers of peaks wrapped in mist. Sharp summits pierce the sky, and deep cliffs form a spectacular landscape.
The sheer Hundred-Zhang Cliff rises vertically like a blade-hewn wall. Dark green Bashan pines spread across the hills, forming an endless sea of trees.
No wonder visitors praise it: "Guilin’s landscapes rank first under heaven, yet they pale beside a single hill of Fulong."
8. Peach Blossom Spring in Zhushan
Peach Blossom Spring – A Misty, Dreamland Paradise
Taoyuan Village in Guandu Town, Zhushan County, is the exact paradise described in Tao Yuanming’s Peach Blossom Spring from the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Vines cling to cliff faces amid exotic blooms and ancient tree trunks as thick as basins.
Streams wind over smooth boulders: they crash into foamy sprays, plunge down layered waterfalls, flow gently along the riverbed, or settle quietly in deep pools.
The winding gorge alternates between narrow secluded valleys and open wooded riverbanks, where fish dart through the clear current. Fishermen could easily follow the stream and lose track of distance.
You hike over colourful jagged stones amid sweet floral fragrance and birdsong. Soon you reach a dense peach grove, just as written: "No other trees grow here; fragrant grass blooms thickly, and fallen petals drift everywhere."
This peach grove is the exact opening scene depicted in Peach Blossom Spring
