Qianlong Jade Shoots (Sun Family Garden / Green Lang Pavilion)

Officially named Green Lang Pavilion, the site is commonly known as Sun Family Garden. Constructed by Sun Pan of Shouzhou at the foot of White Eagle Mountain, it originally covered approximately 66,000 square metres and ranks among the core scenic spots of Bagong Mountain District.
Sun Pan earned his scholarly title through imperial examinations. During the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, he served as a historiographer in the prefectural city. Unwilling to fabricate historical records against his conscience, he resigned and returned to his hometown. He chose the scenic foot of White Eagle Mountain in Bagong Mountain to build the Green Lang Pavilion, where he planted flowers and trees, practised calligraphy, cultivated his temperament and spent his remaining years in peace.
White Eagle Mountain is the highest peak within Huainan City, standing 241 metres above sea level. Its steep, precipitous slopes enclose quiet, secluded valleys fed by endless clear mountain springs. Grotesque rock formations rise everywhere, each with its own unique charm. Lush pines cloak the hills, waves of forest foliage roll in the breeze, and colourful mountain blossoms sway like a scroll of painted screens.
When Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty toured the south of the Yangtze River, he passed this spot and marvelled at the landscape. Seeing the pointed rock outcrops resembling spring bamboo shoots, he brushed the two characters “Jade Shoots” onto a cliff face. Carved into the stone, the characters remain distinct and legible after over a hundred years of wind and rain erosion.
The stunning scenery of Green Lang Pavilion once drew countless visitors. Later, warfare, bandit raids and other disasters damaged its magnificent landscape. With the deepening of China’s opening-up policy and the booming tourism industry, Green Lang Pavilion will surely greet guests from all over the world with a brand-new look.
