Bailuzhou Academy stands on White Egret Islet in the middle of the Gan River, east of Ji’an urban area. Ji’an was part of ancient Luling Commandery. Since the Song Dynasty, this land has cultivated countless celebrities, forming a hub of literary talents long reputed as “a land of literary excellence and integrity”.

Historical documents trace the islet’s name to a celebrated line by the Tang poet Li Bai: “Three peaks half emerge beyond the blue sky; two streams divide the White Egret Islet.” The islet rises amid the vast Gan River split into two waterways, perfectly matching Li Bai’s verse, hence its name. The academy was founded in the 1st year of the Chunyou reign of the Southern Song Dynasty (1241 AD).

Nestled in green trees at the southeastern tip of the islet stand two towering double-eaved ancient towers — Wind-Moon Tower and Yunzhang Pavilion, core landmark buildings of the renowned Bailuzhou Academy. Bailuzhou Academy enjoys equal prestige with White Deer Cave Academy on Lushan Mountain, Ehu Academy in Yanshan and Yuzhang Academy in Nanchang, collectively known as the Four Great Ancient Academies of Jiangxi.
