Mulberry Paper Street
The craft of mulberry papermaking, featured along Mulberry Paper Street, is a national intangible cultural heritage. The street is situated in Buda Village, Puqaqqi Township, Moyu County, known as the "Hometown of Mulberry Paper".
Historical records show that the mulberry papermaking technique in Hotan predates Cai Lun’s papermaking method by more than 100 years, with a traditional craft history of over 2,000 years to date.
The renowned 2-kilometer Mulberry Paper Street houses more than a dozen mulberry paper craftsmen and multiple specialty shops selling mulberry paper on both sides. Up to now, 52 villagers in the whole village master and engage in this ancient craft.
In May 2006, the craft of mulberry papermaking was inscribed on the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists with the approval of the State Council. In June 2007, the Ministry of Culture named Tohti Bakir from Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the representative inheritor of this heritage, listing him on the first roster of national-level intangible cultural heritage representative inheritors.
Mulberry paper features evenly interwoven fibers, elegant texture and distinct ink gradations, while remaining lightweight, soft and pliable. Historically famous, it is mainly used for mounting calligraphy and paintings, wrapping paper currency, making paper umbrellas, firecrackers and cultural crafts.
