Brief History

• It has functioned as an important southern China seaport since the Northern Song Dynasty.
• Officially established as a city on December 9, 1926, and liberated on April 23, 1950.
• In April 1988, Hainan became an independent province and a special economic zone, and Haikou was designated its provincial capital.
• Now it stands as a core carrier of the Hainan Free Trade Port, with key functional zones including Jiangdong New Area, Haikou National High-tech Zone and Integrated Free Trade Zone.
