Bell and Drum Tower
The Bell and Drum Tower stands slightly south of the center of Gaizhou Town, Gaizhou City, on the north-south central axis of the ancient Gaizhou City. It is approximately 350 meters away from the South City Gate and around 340 meters from both the eastern and western city walls.
Built on a high stone platform, the complex consists of a Bell Tower on the east, a Drum Tower on the west, and Guanyin Pavilion in the middle. Behind the pavilion lies the Mahavira Hall, flanked by two side halls on the left and right. All these ancient buildings face south with a slight westward deviation of 23 degrees. Their construction materials and wooden frame structures bear distinct architectural features of the Ming Dynasty. It is widely believed that the tower complex was erected during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty when Wu Yuzhan, a military commander, built the southern city wall.
During the Republic of China period, the Bell and Drum Tower was converted into a "People’s Library". It largely retains its original appearance today and holds great cultural preservation value.
Originally designated a county-level cultural relic protection unit, it was upgraded to a municipal-level protected site by the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government in 1984, and further promoted to a Liaoning Provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in 1988.
